You were an independent contractor receiving cash payments.

Is your employer ready to vouch for you? If your former employer can give you a reference, then you could put it on your resume.

If your employer is going to do a serious background check on you and you think he is going to find out about your not paying taxes, or that he can determine this former employer was not honest, well you are stuck and can't mention the cash job.

No, they can't call the IRS and check whether you've paid taxes... that's not their business! You should absolutely put all your work experience on your resume, and list your sister as your reference since she IS the manager. Be honest that you work for your family- it's your experience that counts. The only reason someone would do a background check is to make sure you don't have a criminal record. They might also do a credit check to make sure they can trust you around money, but they can't find out about your taxes, I don't think.

Well, the first answer is that you are telling the new company that you are a cheater.

But, if you still want to list the experience on your resume...at least be honest at this point and mention that it was under the table.

The glaringly obvious message you're sending to any potential employer is that you are inherently dishonest and a cheat. Not exactly the best fodder for your resume!

Come clean with the IRS and pay your taxes. Then you can rest easy putting the information on your resume.

Yet another reason why you should play by the rules!

Well, now you have a problem, don't you. By evading taxes on your income, you have now run into just one of the many consequences.
