Ever heard the saying. "You scratch my back and I will scratch yours!" Well your mom is trying to tell you that she did not get anything free...she had to do something to get something (earn a living). Maybe even had to earn the money for her education etc. which she is now providing for you without you having to do anything. They did not have it as easy as us Honey...trust me on this!!!
