Here're my step-by-step instructions.

1. Go to http://download.openoffice.org/index.html

2. Click the green area to download OpenOffice.org.
Note: You have to download the whole thing. It's about 100MB.
Note: If you know what "Java Runtime Environment" is and if you have it on your computer already, you can untick the "Include the Java JRE with this download" box.

3. Now you have to wait.

4. When the download is complete, install OpenOffice.org.

5. Start Menu -> All Programs -> OpenOffice.org 2.2 -> OpenOffice Impress.
Note: It's called "Impress" instead of "PowerPoint".

6. Make sure you create a new .PPT file.
Note: The default file format is .odp instead of .ppt.

7. Start doing your job.

8. Whenever you save, save it in .ppt format.
Note: If you don't pay attention, you may get a .odp file instead. Don't worry too much though, since you can always convert between the two formats.

Openoffice.org makes a powerpoint program. It isn't Microsofts Powerpoint but it is compatible and free.
