The 3rd century roman emperor Constantine designed the new testament through a series of votes and stuff with his people. They chose which jesus stories would make it into the new "holy" book. He did this in order to unite the Roman empire under one religious rule. he then combined it with the old testament. before that many romans were pagans worshiping Jupiter(Zeus) and such, and others were christians(hence the need to unite them).
Many Christians dont know that this is how the bible was made. It was no different than any other book. Just a man(Constantine) with a goal(unite empire). lol.

I would direct you to the writings on the Council of Nicea. It got put together there. Note that the Apocrypha was attached to it also.
The believers before that had what we call the Old Testament, though under a different name and it was not 'together' as we know it, the writings of the Apostles copied for the churches to use, and the writings of various people who came after, like Polycarp.
What the Council at Nicea were doing was trying to establish a format for Christianity. Even though I thjink that Constantine was nutty along with the church fathers in many cases, they did a good job on the Bible.

Over a period of 3000 years on or off, 66 men wrote the books of the bible. The Old Testament was already compiled before Jesus's birth. The New Testament is made up of the writings of the apostles.
