You know - as you read silently to yourself, you can actually like hear it in your head. Or if you think something but not say it out loud. That kind of inner voice.

After reading the question "Do people who are born blind ever dream?" to my neighbor, he asked me the puzzling question "Do people who are born deaf have an inner voice?"

I've been wondering this for like a month and a half now. Does anyone know the answer.

[ If anyone was wondering if people who are born blind ever dream - yes they dream, but instead of "seeing" shapes, textures and colors, they "hear" and "feel" the dream. ]

- Sorry if this is in the wrong section!

Thanks! =]

No, I would say they don't have an inner voice. Hearing people have an inner voice because we can hear and use an oral language system. Deaf people (mostly) use a visual language system. They have no oral language to hear as an inner voice. I have deaf kids with cochlear implants. I asked this question to a deaf man who uses ASL. I wondered essentially, how does he think? He signed that he thinks in sign! That makes sense since it's the only language he knows. He also reported that he sometimes 'signs out loud' when he's by himself. There you go.

From what I understand, the deaf "see signing." If they don't sign then it's pictures and feelings. If you ever played or know about the game The Sims, you will see objects float above their head. Well that's what's like for the deaf. The blind don't see objects or colors because the brain can't grasp colors or objects on its own. It's sounds and feelings (mentally and physically) for the blind.
