So who are the "sons of God"? Doesn't the church teach that Jesus was the only son of God? According to this God had quite a few sons and they thought the daughters of man were hot and made a bunch of babies.
Does anyone want to give a shot at explaining this?

1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

3And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

5And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

6And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

7And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing

Man I do not know where you guys get some of this stuff. I have about 6 totally different views, theories etc about the beginning of Genesis chapter 6, and everyone I have read has no bases in the bible, I know because I read it. No where is there anything about the 'nephiliums', the reference a couple of people have made about the 'fallen angels' have nothing to do with this passage.

Genesis 6:1-7 (from the new living translation which is sometimes easier to understand)

When the human population began to grow rapidly on the earth, the sons of God saw the beautiful women of the human race and took any they wanted as their wives. Then the Lord said. "My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, they will live no more than 120 yrs."

In those days, and even afterward, giants lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of god had intercorse with human women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes mentioned in legends of old.

Now the Lord observed the extent of the people's wickedness, and he saw that all their thoughts were consistently and totally evil. So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them. It broke his heart. And the Lord said, I will completely wipe out this human race that I have created. Yes, and I will destroy all the animals and birds, too. I am sorry I ever made them." But Noah found favor with the Lord

** Honestly I belive that he is talking about Men in general*** Because we are all the sons of God right. Isn't he your heavenly father?

The Nephelim. God had many 'sons', called Angels. These angels began to desire human women and caused a huge mess. God's Son though is Jesus, for it was only Jesus that God made with his own two 'hands'. Everything else was done through God's holy spirit using Jesus as the master worker. This is why Jesus is so important. The others, including mankind are dearly loved by God, but his first 'born' is his pride and joy for obvious reasons.

So who are the "sons of God"?
Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit are one, the Godhead. Haven't you heard, "for I am in the father and the father is in me"? so the son of God are those who look to the Godhead as their father.

Doesn't the church teach that Jesus was the only son of God?
Indeed. However, we are also invited to be his sons because of his eternal love for us, one so exeeding, he even sent his one and only son to be crucified and be risen, so that we too may be called his son, and he our father.

According to this God had quite a few sons and they thought the daughters of man were hot and made a bunch of babies.
Unless people are willing to accept Christ, they would not be called the son of God.

Does anyone want to give a shot at explaining this?
Me.

Muesky...I have my belief on your questions of which I try to explain on my web page, this is not an add if you e mail me I will give you the web site address. Basically what happen was the angels in heaven were jealous that we were chosen above them and promised a place closer to GOD with more powers than they have. So some of they which are called the sons of GOD ,200 of them plotted to take the daughters of man for mates for the purpose of breeding into humans and messing up GOD's plan for us their children with powers above man, stopped the expression all men are created equal and took away mans dominion of earth. GOD sent his most trusted and powerful angels to defeat the 200 and chain them. The only way to remove their children and return dominion of the earth back to man was to destroy all the land dwellers because they could inter into animals as well as humans. Thus GOD chose a clean family and animals he was sure of, then sealed them in an ark (Noah's Ark} and flooded the earth. Not against man, but for mans sake and earth was returned as mans dominion
This is revealed in the book of Enoch which was excluded in most bibles. Enoch was Noah's grandfather who lived 800 years and walked with GOD.

no one seems to understand the word giant or nephilum the way it is used in genesis, depending what bible you have it says giants in or nephilum on the earth;
they all say:there were giants in (or nephilum on) the earth in those days and also after that the sons of GOD came unto the daugthers of man and bore them children....which became mighty men...
this happened after there was giants in or nephilum on the earth GOD is giving you a time referance the giants or nephilum are what we call dinosaur bones they were already in the ground.not the mighty men which were half human and half spirit.

At 1 Peter 3:20 the “spirits in prison” are described as having “once been disobedient when the patience of God was waiting in Noah’s days.” In his second inspired letter to Christians, Peter refers to them as “angels that sinned.” (2 Pet. 2:4, 5) And the disciple Jude adds: “The angels that did not keep their original position but forsook their own proper dwelling place he has reserved with eternal bonds under dense darkness for the judgment of the great day.”—Jude 6.

That angels did indeed forsake their proper dwelling place prior to the flood of Noah’s day is revealed at Genesis 6:2, where we read: “The sons of the true God began to notice the daughters of men, that they were good-looking; and they went taking wives for themselves, namely, all whom they chose.” Yes, these spirit sons of God or angels had the power to materialize in human form, as is evident from the fact that faithful angels did so at divine direction to communicate messages to men on earth. (Gen. 18:1, 2, 8, 20-22; 19:1-11; Josh. 5:13-15) However, when numerous angels of their own volition left their proper place and assigned service in the heavens to have fleshly relations, they were doing something contrary to God’s law. They became guilty of perversion, as indicated by Jude’s comparing the sin of these angels to the sexual perversion of which the inhabitants of Sodom, Gomorrah and surrounding cities were guilty.—Jude 7.

Bene Elohim[fallen angels] mated with human women and produced Nephilim/Nefilim[half angel-half human]which were 10-15 feet tall and superhuman. That's one of the chief reasons for the Flood."Aliens" in the 20th and now 21st century are these same fallen angels tampering with humans and cows. These are the Last Days!In Hebrews we know angels can take human form.In Daniel and
Jude we read about these beings. And yes, gigantic skeletons have been found in the Middle East decades ago.

I think it is referring to angels but the bible says Jesus was the only begotten son there are reverences to us all being sons of God but Jesus was the only one that God formed to be born of woman.

Sons of God means pious people and Jesus peace be upon was son of God. Not like our sons. This taking means marrying the girls of their choice. The words here are rude because of translations and re-translations and many a time destruction of bible and re-writing of memories. In general this is a correct information

First off, let me qualify my answer by stating that I am not a Fundamentalist.

Genesis is filled with adapted folklore from pre-Biblical times. Cain and Abel, Noah, Tower of Babel, Sodom and Gomorrah, Jacob and Esau, and Joseph and his brothers all seem more like folklore than history.

Pre-Biblical stories of the Nephalim and Giants mentioned in Genesis are all parts of older stories that did not survive into modern times.

rashi, who is the foremost commentator on the bible, addresses this question. He says, "SONS OF GOD-The sons of the rulers and magistrates. . . Every use of Elokim(God's name) indicates authority. . ." However I would like to understand how it is exactly that Jesus was the son of God, to me it sounds like Mary was covering up the fact that she cheated. I mean did was anyone witness to the fact that she was a virgin prior to the birth. I give her credit though she definitely had an original excuse:)
