I sailed merchant for 6yrs from Nov99-jun05 and yes the jobs are at times hard to come by but they are out there. Yes you can attend one of several maritime schools with Kings Point being the equal to the naval academy. no you do have to fight in the war only if you chose to have a commission. I would def look in it and look to get a 3rd ae ticket and contact one of the engineer unions IE: MEBA they have some good gigs. Most us flagged vessel are with the govt but there are jobs out there the industry is always looking for hard working and bright engineers. though the life is not for every one you can def make good use of your time. its not like being WW2 so you won't have to play navy just straight $$$ homey.

My father did 52 years as a merchant mariner. Got torpedoed several times during World War Two. Received five awards of the U.S. Merchant Marine Medal. At present, U.S.flagged tankers and cargo ships are delivering supplies to U.S. forces in Iraq and South Asia. Prior to the commencement of our combat operations against Iraq we used an Australian minesweeper and trained dolphins to remove a lot of mines in the sea approaches to Um Qasr in Southern Iraq.

When Einstein was asked what kind of weapons World War III would be fought with, Einstein responded, “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” The interpretation is the following: with the mass destruction weapons we have today, a WW III will eliminate civilization and the mankind with go back to dark-dark ages
