You want control? You got it! [You also have the ability to really screw things up, so take baby steps -- make one change at a time and test it before you get to into it.]

Go to Start > Run and type mmc in the run box. (microsoft management console). The console opens up and you'll see a folder called Console Root on the left. Click on the File menu, and choose Add/Remove Snap-In. In that dialog box, click on Add down near the bottom. Scroll down to Group Policy and select it. Click Add. The Group Policy Object should be Local Computer. Click Finish. Click OK.

You should now have a Local Computer Policy down below your Console Root.

Expand that Local Computer Policy. Expand User Configuration. Under Administrative Templates, you'll find a section for Start Menu and Taskbar. Edit the option "Prevent changes to taskbar . . . " to enabled. (prevention enabled)

Below Start Menu and Task Bar, you'll find all your desktop settings.

Another warning: don't go too crazy setting up the restrictions -- you can really make things inconvenient for yourself if you set something wrong. Of course, you can always go back into the console and fix it -- if you remember what you did!

Good luck!

You can protect your machine when it hibernates or goes into standby - no-one can get into it at all then!!

1.
Open Power Options in Control Panel.

2.
Click the Advanced tab, then click Prompt for password when computer resumes from sleep. The password for which you will be prompted when the computer resumes is the password for the currently logged-on user account.

Note

• To open Power Options, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Power Options.

• You use your Windows password for both standby and hibernation

You did not mention which OS you have. I will presume that you are running XP Pro. Here is how to do it Go to Start --> Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes. In Group Policy Editor, go to Local Computer Policy --> User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Control Panel --> Display There you have the setting with name "Prevent Changing Wallpaper". Enable this setting to do what you desire.

Make yourself the administrator,..if you are the main person of the computer that is. Your screensaver should automatically let your PC know you are gone, so it'll go back to the log in screen and you'll have to get back in by entering your password.

Don't have a password? Make one. Very simple.

You'll want to setup user permissions. I don't how on XP, but I know it can be done for a Mac. Try googling these keywords: "XP custom limitations", "XP user permissions", "limit usability of xp".
