This argument goes all the way back to Malthus. Technology and long life actually have little to do with it, although the lack of predators might. Most population growth is taking place in the parts of the world where life expectancy is shortest and most people have little access to technology. If you look at the impact of humans on the planet, there seems little doubt that people have already overpopulated the planet. Other species are becoming extinct at an alarming rate. Vast numbers of people have too little to eat and little access to clean water. We're cutting down the forests that are the lungs of our planet and wiping out entire species of fish. I could go on, but you get the idea. There are too many of us already.

I think either one of 3 things could happen... #1. The human race could be wiped out (kinda like the Dinosaurs) by a Cataclysmic Natural Event (Comet or Asteroid hitting the Earth). #2. We could wipe OURSELVES out (by Atomic or Biological Warfare), or #3. Or we could overpopulate the World to the extent- that we become vulnerable to the appearance of a "Super Flu" type bug- that takes NO prisoners & leaves NO survivors. ... Now SOME might argue that the way to escape ALL of these "fates"- is for some portion of us to "set up shop" on some distant moon- or Planet. But there may be a FOURTH "Doomsday Senario"- for the Human Race...- That our Genes may have a "Finite" # of replications built into them... -In OTHER words, after "X"- # of generations- humans will simply STOP reproducing. And in 120 years or so- we'd ALL be "History..." -Imagine THAT ! :)

I think you are ahead of the crowd but behind the leaders. Over population and overconsumption are two of the root causes of our current climate crisis. CO2 levels match population curves quite well. No CO2 reduction campaigns will save us unless population control is included. That could also go so far as legalizing assisted suicide. The right to death movement could become as vocal as the right to life movement

Many people think we are already over the limit. We're using up resources faster than the earth is replenishing them. Just a matter of time.

overpopulation is all a matter of how they are living,
the world can support the fewest people of the hunter gather types.
if we use good genetic engineering and careful use of resources (they are running out), then the earth can support many people.
we do have predictors, they are, war, no rain, flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, bacteria, viruses, and ourselves.
