A Kafir (Kafur) Is a general term for unbeliever, it could mean polytheist or atheist.

It is closer to Atheist though.

A Kafir is a person who is essentially a non-believer.
The worst form of a Kafir is someone who accepts Islam in pulic but really hates it.
Kafir can be loosely tranlated into English as the word, "Infidel"

A 'kafir' is an unbeliever. 'Kufr' is idolatry. Not worshiping in God engaging in idol worship.
