Me and my friends are trying to get my friend a cake for her birthday, a 1 layer one, mediumish size, and white. We are really on a money crunch. Does anyone know any REALLY cheap places to buy quality cakes? 5 dollars would be good.

Any supermarket with an instore bakery will take orders for custom made cakes. However, the "taste" usually is not so great. You could buy a Duncan Hines Yellow cake mix and bake it; buy one or two cans of canned Icing and frost the cake, once it has cooled. [A professional could manage with one can but an amateur would need two] You could even bake the cake the day before the Birthday event. It will be easier to frost. You'll need a spatula to frost the cake. Here's a professional tip.... when icing the cake, put a big dallop of icing on the top of the cake, in the center; spread it out with the spatula. But never let the spatula touch the cake.... push the icing with the spatula out to the edges of the cake, adding more and more icing until the whole cake is covered. Remember, the secret is to not let the spatula touch the cake; scoop up icing with the spatula and dump on the cake, then spread it out. If the spatula touches the cake, you'll get cake crumbs all in the icing and it will look tacky, like you don't know what you're doing. Go buy a cake! But $5.00 won't cut it.

Medium cake for $5.00? not unless its on the day old table. It will cost you about $10.00 for what you want. But you can go to Safeway, Raleys, Save Mart, Albertson's, Food 4 Less, Food Maxx, Costco, or Sam's Club. I hate to be so forward, or blunt as to your price you want to spend for a cake but, that is the food cost for such a cake, not including the labor costs and other mark ups included for a business to make their profit.

I know because I used to be a retail store baker when I worked in the food service.

Try Sam's Club. I bought a huge cake for $14 from there.
