Hi there .In normal Stereo you have 2 channel sound coming out of two speakers in front of you .In 5.1 channel surround sound you have 6 speakers (front left, front center, and front right .rear left and rear right with a powered subwoofer usually placed between the 2 front stereo speakers.) with sound coming out of all 6 speakers. The front 3 speakers mainly handle the music dialogue and action sounds on the screen .The back 2 speakers are for off screen sound effects and the subwoofer gives you the very low bass notes you can feel as well as hear. This gives you the Cinema effect at home

it adds additional detail to the front L & R speakers the center takes hold of most of the dialog and the surround rear add on to sound effects the .1 portion is all the low end bass . By seperating the channels of sound it gives you a realistic experience while watching a movie. If you think 5.1 is something you should check out 11.2

The two rear speakers give out different sounds, say a bar scene, the left one you might hear glasses clinking, in the right speaker you hear a door closing. Before 5.1, both rear speakers emitted the same sounds. This gives you that surround sound feel of actually being there. Of course the program your watching has to have been recorded in this medium for it to have full effect.

Well, put on a DVD of Star Wars (the first film, 1977) with a 5.1 system, and then you'll see what's so special about it!
