i'm going to be in 11th grade and in both 9yh and 10th i haven't tried out becuase i didn't have a physical and they already started practices (in the summer and i had no idea till 2 yrs later). i've played in 8th grade i was pretty good (not to brag,k?) but i don't want to join cuz usually the ppl that join volleyball are stuck up blonde and irritating cuz they thinkthey know it all and play better than everyone in a gym class. i don't want to be a part of that stereotype cuz i don't thinki'm better than anyone i just love to play. -- ok , i was setter in 8th grade and i don't serve overhand. it's more like a serve but to the side (right side*) and it works great for me because i can get it to dive where i want it to (and get many points). can't seem to get the overhand.

should i join? i really don't know if i shud listen to myslf and not join cuz i don't like the ppl i'd have to be teamed up w/ or join cuz i really love the sport. ->some realistic answers plz?(sry im confusing)

I don't want to be discouraging but if you can't get an overhand serve over they most likely won't except you.
If you can get your overhand serve before tryouts go ahead. Find a coach or a trainer to work on your serve.
It sounds like you could be good.

Tryout. You never know they might just think you're good enough to work on your serve on the side of practice. =]]

I think you really want to play volleyball, but just dislike the people who play at your school. If you have a YMCA or anything like that in your hometown they usually offer volleyball leagues which would give you an alternative to being around those people. It is a tough choice, but just because you play volleyball does not mean you have to act like the other volleyball players. You only have have to act like a volleyball player on the court. Sure you will make some new friends, but playing volleyball does not mean your whole personality and network of friends changes. Sounds like you want to play for the right reasons, love of the game. So i say get out there and play and have fun. Good luck and i hope this helps. Oh by the way just because you cant serve overhand does not mean you can not score points. At the end of the day if your serve percentage is higher from the side then serve from the side. I hope this helps.

I was asking myself the same question last night acctually. If you really love volleyball and you think you will get alot out of it then go for it! But to make the team you will HAVE TO know how to do the overhand serve correctly. It is a key skill for volleyball. All though if you make setter on the team you should do very well. You can always try! Don't forget , quitters will never win, and the winners will never quit. Its better to try and be defeated, then to quit and never knoq how well you could have done! Hope this works out for you and good luck!

Of course you should try out, make sure you have your physical, find out about any camps or conditioning the coaches want you to have or are putting on themselves (we have 2) and just touch a volleyball every chance you get until tryouts. Be calm and confident when you go and remember its not the other players tryout, they don't decide who makes the team. If you don't make it this year, ask the coach what you need to improve on for next year.
good luck

Reverse the stereotype. Join. I'm in 8th grade now and I joined the volleyball team. A lot of our competition served overhand and since you're in 11th grade almost everyone will. Join a camp and learn to serve overhand.

Hey I have been in many situations similar to yours. Join the team. You shouldn't let other people ruin what you enjoy doing. Even if you dont like these girls, be nice to them. Mabye you can get to know them and they could be really cool people. But if not at least they wont be mean to you if you are nice to them. So all I can say is, enjoy your volleyball season. =]

You should definately try out. I'm going to be a senior next fall, and I keep looking back at my freshman, sophmore, and even junior year, and think "I should have joined track (volleyball, tennis, etc.") I actually am going to join Tennis next fall (which will be difficult, because I have never played, but my good friend who is on varsity has been teaching me!)

When you look back later in life, you will be glad you did it. Join for yourself, don't not join because of those "blondes".
