I'm a musician who plays for a church, and I filled out a w-9 form.
Gross pay should be 400/mo ($100 for each sunday)

It's my first paycheck from them and it reads $369.23

All I did was fill out a w-9 form...I thought w-9s don't tax you?

You could get a 1099 at the end of the year and be responsible for your own taxes, but I presume that they are treating you as an employee and withholding taxes.

Was there any documentation with the check saying what they took out the other $30.77 for? That's real close to what social security would be. Maybe they just had you fill out the wrong form - if you are an employee they should have given you a W-2 to fill out, and then they'd take out social security. You fill out a W-9 if you are working as an independent contractor, would get a 1099 at the end of the year, and would be responsible for paying your own taxes.

Ask them what's going on.

By the way, if you're an employee, they should have you fill out a W-2 instead - but then they'd pay half of your social security - otherwise you'll be responsible for the full 15.3%.

If you were an employee, you would have filled out a W-4, not W-2.

A W-9 is just a request for a tax payer ID #. Usually that means they are paying you as a self employed person, but it doesn't necessarily mean that.
