simply because we are a judgmental society.
WE LIKE TO ASSUME WE KNOW IT ALL.
POOR VANGOUGH must have been schizophrenic.
HOW IN THE NAME OF ALL THATS GOOD AND BEAUTIFUL CAN WE ASSESS HIM.
people like to tag others. not just the philosophers artists and poets. THEY DO IT TO THEIR NEIGHBORS and friend.
YOU WOULD HAVE TO LIVE IN THAT TIME FRAME TO BE ABLE TO ACCESS WAT REALLY WAS GOING ON.

Although that can be freely taken out of context, the point is that it is the job of a poet or a philosopher to be an analyst. Considering how insane the world can appear at times, I suppose it could be likened to being a psychotherapist with the worst patient ever.
However, having to steal a page from Shatner & Nimoy: "In an insane world the sane man must appear to be insane."
In other words, what the heck is the analyst doing in the asylum? He doesn't belong there!

Because true poets and philosophers tell the truth contrary to public beliefs, they don't conform to societies boundaries and are therefore labeled as insane

Because society does not understand or agree with what poets or philosophers say. It is human nature to shun that which is different from oneself. Sad but true... *sigh*

I am a poet, and I'm not insane. people don't think i am that i know about. I'm called psycho by my friends and thats different then in sane right?

Sometimes because they see beyond the illusion and understand the truth. Creative type people usually are labeled (wrongly) that way. Many are highly intelligent and very sensitive. Living life in a world very different can be maddening.

because they're being different then the ordinary norm. they understand that life is what you make it so when discovering or creating ideas, they're far from ordinary...they're extraordinary

most are probably misunderstood and we just assume they were. "Rumors" from one person to another causes such labels.
