4 years ago I joined the military because I almost died in a car accident. I realized that the non-literal road I was going on would eventually lead to lots of drugs and partying, fluncking out of school and maybe barefoot and prego in a 2 red light town that i despised. I signed teh dotted line. By the age of 19 I had traveled the world and depended on myself. Now, I have two years left on my commitment. I have the discipline to finish school and to be self sufficiant. I live in a wonderful city that I am in love with. I am now a different person than I was or I could have been. I am thankful for the military for giving me a hold on life. Now, I have no need for the military to stabalize me. It has given me the tools and personal growth experiences to be the person I always wanted to be. I am no means a loser or a desperate person thanks to the military. I am an open minded individual who believes in the live and let live way of life. I am not a blood thirsty person either. I hate violence and ignorance. People have their own reasons. Like I said: It helped me become who I am today, but I sure as hell cannot wait until I am out!!

The day I received my draft notice, I went to the Army recruiter to discuss my options. The decision was pretty simple, volunteer and pick my own job, or just go with the draft and let them pick it for me.

I signed on the dotted line. Paid with an extra year for a 4 month delayed entry, and the Airborne course in the contract. I figured (rightly so) that they didn't have much use for paratroopers in the jungles of Vietnam, although there were some. Only crazy people jump out of perfectly good aircraft, but those were crazy times.

Not really the same thing, but I joined the Young Marines, and this is my obligation. "From this day forward, I sincerely promise, I will set an example for all other youth to follow. And I shall never do anything that will bring discrace, or dishonor upon my God, my Country, or its' flag, my parents, myself, or the Young Marines. These I will honor and respect in a manner that will reflect credit upon them and myself. Semper Fidelas.

When I joined it was because my dad served in three wars, his brothers served in WW II and Korea. I did 21 yrs and retired. My brother served two tours in Vietnam. Like families where people are cops, doctors, lawyers, my family served in the military. My oldest daughter is is now in the Navy.

I joined the military to serve the country that had been so good to me.I also joined for the camaraderie and tradition. I wanted to see the world. Plus I am from Oklahoma, tell a kid from Oklahoma that he can get paid to hunt and camp and it is hard to stop him from signing up.

having lived with a lot of WWII vets. I grew up around military people. I got lost once in the desert of El Paso. A soldier found me from Fort Bliss. I was 5 and asked him to marry me, he said yes. cute story huh? But that soldier made sure I got returned to my family and carried me the entire way while I was crying. He was my hero. So was the Army nurse that saved my life when I was 20.
I think that was a part of it and hearing my relatives stories influenced me.
Never regretted it.

In my opinion, every American should serve their country for a minimum of 2 years.

I joined because I wanted to serve my country with pride and honor. To be apart of something greater.
