This afternoon I had a cavity filled near the front of my mouth.. and now a small area above the filling (on the gum) is black/brown-ish.

I know it was a composite filling (whatever that means?) I tried brushing my teeth, flossing, rinsing.

Will this ugly looking spot go away soon?! Should I call my dentist?

I don't want to smile now.. =(

A composite filling is a white filling and shouldn't be contributing to this area, but it isn't impossible that some of the material that was used was left on the gum surface. I would rub the area gently with a Qtip or piece of gauze to see if it comes off. It is possible that there was some trauma, but I think it would look more red and inflammed. I would give it a few days since the oral tissues heal quite quickly and if it doesn't go away call the office for a recheck. Good luck!

Perhaps your gums were traumatized in some way. I would think it likely that in a few days, this spot will go away on its own if it wasn't there before. Give it a little time before calling the dentist about it. But if it doesn't go away, and it bothers you that much, then call the dentist.

It won't likely harm. It relies upon on how deep the hollow area is, no rely if or no longer they're going to could desire to numb it or no longer. I had a small hollow area and no numbing became needed. some dentists will use some sort of gasoline to make you greater comfortable and could no longer could desire to furnish you a shot of Novocaine. maximum fillings are actually a plastic form compound. ultimate to dodge the steel fillings...they are actually looking a number of them are inflicting issues
