Birkinstocks are generally open toe sandals. They aren't the cheap rubber type, they are around $125 a pair.

I rarely wear shoes when I am in Church... Actually I hate wearing shoes at all.. My Church family will snicker at me and say,"where are your shoes?" in which I respond..
"Uhhh It worked for Moses..."

I never found birkenstocks to be very comfy myself..

When I attended the Samoan ward in SF, one brother wore a regular suit on top, but instead of pants, wore a plain dark lavalava (sort of wrap around) with sandals. And he looked very dignified.

I guess its up to the individuals. In some areas it would be a requirement. At the ward I attend the men wear skirts and sandals on occassion.
