That is an excellent idea.
What you could do is buy a euro rail pass from outside Europe. The pass is sold for 3,5,7,9 days and covers a few countries from Italy to UK.
Most tourist use the night train to travel across Europe so they could save on the cost of overnight accomodation.

If you're flying into Zurich and just taking one day trip to each, and you're staying in the cities themselves, it's probably best to just buy tickets as you go. Add another day-trip (Schaffhausen and the Rheinfalls) and it might be worth getting a one-month half-price ticket (99 franks)--or a one-year (150) two-year (250) or three-year (350) one if you expect to be back.
If you're flying into Geneva, there's a combination half-tax and ticket to your destination that I would recommend. Swiss Card, I think it's called.
If you're going to Pilatus or are thinking of a longer day-trip (Andermatt or Davos say), it's worth looking into the 3-day Swiss Flexi Pass. You also get into a bunch of museums free with that.
You can also check out the SwissPass but I think normally you'd need to take more and longer trips to make it worthwhile. That does include trains, trams and buses in Zurich too, though--and boats as well. But you can get other deals for that, like the 9 O'clock pass, good throughout the canton of Zurich (including the lake) from 9 am to midnight, for I think 22 franks (or 11 if you have the half-price card).
If I had to guess, I'd say Zurich to Lucerne returning the same day with no discount is 50 franks (maybe 80 in first class), Zurich to Bern and back 60/90. Schaffhausen 35 or so (not worth going first-class unless you're on a packed train from Germany).

You do NOT want to buy a Eurail pass, they are not valid
in Switzerland. They have their own rail pass, called a
Swisspass, it is good for varying number of days, and can
only be purchased outside of Switzerland, so buy it online
before you go. Other ideas for day trips would be Interlaken,
in the lake district, or the Rhinefalls, or Einsedeln, or Uetliberg. I would skip Bern, as it is primarily a governmental
center, not really a tourist area.
