The importance is for the person to be holy and not the river.
The acts that we do are only rituals and pollute the rivers. The rivers are actually meant for supplying drinking water to the population. Our acts only create wide spread diseases.

Nothing. The soul is already in Heaven or Hell. At the judgment, our bodies will be reunited with the soul, a body designed for the place it will spend eternity.

When a person dies, his soul dies! Thus you can do anything to the dead body, it won't mind. But the relatives might.
Psalm 78:50 He made a way for a path to his anger: he spared not their souls from death, and their cattle he shut up in death. (DRC)
