If a person was conviced of a crime. And the sentence is "vacated" - what exactly does that mean?

Means they abandoned it, made it go away. It doesn't necessarily mean they can't or won't impose a new one.

If a sentence was vacated, then the conviction still stands, but the appellate court found some problem with the sentence, either what it was or how it was determined. So, the matter is remanded for determination of a new sentence based on the conviction.

If a conviction was vacated, it's usually because the trial was found so severely defective that the verdict could not stand. But not so bad that the person cannot be retried (new trial).

Look up the word vacated in the dictionary, now apply what you have learned to the word sentence. Are you able to figure it out for yourself? Good boy!

That the words of the judgement have disappeared just like the convict will.

I am the Fringe and it just cost too much to lock these people up!
