Once I start my new job and get situated again, I was looking to adopt a retired racing greyhound. Does anybody out there own one of these dogs? They seem to be very compassionate, quiet, and intelligent. I would love to have a new companion and also give a little life a second chance. Does anyone know about where I would find resources to adopt one of these dogs? Do they require any special medical attention seeing that they are ex-racers? What are their cute and funny quirks that are unique to their breed? I'd love any information on this! Thanks a lot :)

I've never owned a greyhound, but know many who do. And I do own Whippets, which are related to the greyhound.
The retired racing greyhounds make wonderful pets. And there is a huge need for homes for them. You would be saving a life if you adopted one.
There are tons of rescue groups all over the country. Just Goggle Greyhound Rescue and the name of your city or the closest large city. The websites usually have lots of info on the greyhound.
They are big couch potatoes. Most people think they will be high strung. Nope. They love to sleep. Their low energy levels make them easy to live with. If you have a secure yard to allow them to run a bit and take them for a good walk, that's about all they need to be happy. Most the rescues put the dogs in foster homes to be housebroken, taught how to live in a house, and see if they are cat safe and small dog safe. So, by the time you get the dog, it has learned what life is outside the kennels at the race track.
I've included a link to a national greyhound rescue that has been around for 20 years. Check and see if they have a local chapter near you.
Also, there is lots of info on Greyhounds and what to expect.

I adopted a grey 2 & 1/2 years ago. She is different than most greyhounds. she is rowdy and jumps all over people when they come in (just because she thinks the company is for her). She RUNS up and down the steps, she walks backwords and barks all the time. None of this is the greyhound characteristics. I love her! My girlfriend hates her! We got a grey because we wanted a "real" grey. Dossile, sleeps all day and just wants to be by you. We got only the >>wan't to be by you part! Our greyhound is also a food stealer. You cannot leave food on the stove, bread loaf on the counter, or anything on the kitchen table and leave for any amount of time without it being gone. We are alway very carefull now when we leave the the room to make her go with us or make sure the counters and table have nothing on them. When we first got her (being a new home) she ate ALL our shoes, belts and carried dirty laundry around the house. She is over all that now. I paid 250.00 and that covered everything. She is now 5 &1/2 and it took me over a year to start totally loving her like I do now. Remember though that my grey is not your "typical" greyhound! I want another but my girlfiend forbids it. She will only let me have one if it is a puupy and I have no clue where to find those unless they are an italian greayhound . Best of luck with your decision!~

One thing to keep in mind. Greyhounds have about 8,000 years of breeding for the dog with the most desire to chase things- anything. They can't be allowed off lead in an unfenced area without risking they go off chasing a rabbit, deer, or even a blowing piece of paper - right under the wheels of a truck.
At home they look for COMFORT - soft places to lie, warmth ect.....

you sound wonderful to think of this. i spend my life taking care of animals and saving them. my friend has a rescued greyhound. people always say that when you rescue an animals, especially a dog, they always know it. you'll love it, they are so sweet. life does deserve a second chance, damn those people who breed animals for their entertainment.

visit www.farmsanctuary.org if you are interested in ways to help other animals without spending any money or time for that matter. i love that place, been there many times. great people.

we had one a while back. they are pretty good dogs. make sure you get an older one, the one we had was young approx. 8 mnths. she went through a teenager stage bit me and tried to bite our son. so we turned her over to the greyhound rescue. She came from a breeder/racer who rehomed his dogs on his own..bad idea in my opinion.
crate train!! housetraining w/ours was horrible!! everytime i would turn around she would go to the bathroom in the house. they love to run, so dont let it loose w/out a fence. They need a very strict routine, since they have one living as a race dog.

go to AKC and look under greyhound

try to find a race track around your city and talk to some people from there about how you can come about adopting one.
