Because gay people getting married doesn't affect anyone but them. If your own faith or marriage are threatened by gay people, they must not be very strong.

Not all atheists do support gay marriage.
Not all Christians oppose it.
It does seem as if an inordinate number of atheists in this particular forum are young gay people who are angry with Christianity, because they see it as the authority they must rebel against.
Frankly, if gay people would just keep their pride at home, I wouldn't mind them having the same legal rights as any other couple who are sharing their lives together. I know that making it legal in the courthouse will not make it legal in the Kingdom of Heaven. Let them get married, it doesn't really matter. Just don't give them the idea that because it is legal in the court house that they can now bring it into the church, where God's law still prevails.
Here is one place where that grand old phrase "separation of church and state" works for the good of the church, for a change.

Im Christian and if i would have seen this a few weeks ago i would have been against it too. When you find out that a close family member is gay it can change your opinion of things. I know i would rather my brother meet some other guy he loves and be able to get married rather than have several partners. Its not easy accepting gay in the family but if he cant change i hope for him to be in a secure safe relationship at least.

Just because someone is atheist doesn't mean they support gay marriage. There are a wide range of beliefs among atheists. Personally I'm not on any sort of bandwagon for the cause, but if someone wants a same sex marriage, I won't stand in their way. Personally I do support people having loving monogamous relationships rather than jumping from partner to partner to partner... so in that sense if someone is gay, I'm glad they can be happily married rather than lonely.

That was the most horrible additional details I've ever scene!!!
Shame on you!
And get a hold of yourself. Even if America legalizes every sin, not that people weren't sinning before or even after it, you can't destroy Christ. Focus on what is important here. Just because the law might prevent the hand from doing something doesn't get rid of the sin. The heart sins first, then the hand.

Atheists often are humanists, which means they value and respect the rights of all people to hold their own beliefs (unless those beliefs leads to harm to others, of course). Too often religious people get so invested in trying to force their own value system on others without regard to the unreasonable curtailment of the other's rights, yet would be the first to cry foul if someone tried to do the same to them.
So, why do we support gay marriage? We don't support it; it is simply none of our business. It is the sole right of the gays to pursue or not.

atheism=gay? i have a problem understanding your logic. i do think that atheists would support something just to go against the church, but accusing them of being gay is unchristian and very childish. it is an unfair judgement of them and is completely unfounded. if atheists concern you so much, teach them the truth of the gospel instead of getting on here and acting like a child with your foolish insults. second, this is a country founded on christian morals and values, but it is not a "christian country". third, i do not agree with gay marriage. i dont approve of the gay lifestyle (i have nothing against gay people, just the lifestyle ). but, you cannot force someone to abide by your religious standards. we as christians were never meant to force beliefs on someone, but to show people the truth of Gods word. so if gay people want to get married, let them. and in response to the girl about 2 answers up from me, we are called to love everyone, that does not mean that we are to encourage and love their sin. and God in the bible never once says He hates homosexuals, it says he hates homosexuality. He loves all people, be they sinners or saints, but does not love their sin. read the bible.

Why not?
Nothing wrong in gay marriage, its their life they can do anything with it.
Plus this isn't a christian nation; there a plenty of diverse religions in this nation. American isn't just christian it is also Buddist, Catholic, and so much more.
Don't be so hateful, open your mind.
This "nation" is no longer in the 1800, but the 21st century where the people are so much different.
Some people embrace gay marriage who aren't even gay, some Catholics embrach Buddist even though they are Catholic.
Other races are marrying other races unlike in the "olden" day where it was unheard of.
A little advice for you think before you talk because your really pissed me off with this question.

I can't speak for other atheists, but I support gay marriage because I support equal rights and equal protections under the law.
This isn't a Christian nation. It's a democratic one. By the people, for the people; not by Christianity for Christianity.

There is really nothing wrong with supporting gay marriage. There is really no intrinsic right or wrong. It is you who gave value judgment to anything based on your beliefs, tradition, culture, knowledge from parents, priest and so forth. In actuality things are just "IS" it is we who describe what the "is" is. If atheist support gay marriage, it is because they have no limiting beliefs such as right or wrong, likes or dislikes, sin or not sin.

If someone is gay they are born that way they didn't ask to be gay they just turned out that way and if there is a god he made them that way so why doesn't Christan's support them if their god made them like that they only want a fair deal in life just like anyone Else so why do people judge them for them wanting their rights to be heard they are people as well and can be very loving just as much as Christan are suppose to be is that fair.
