After your 10-day leave (following boot camp) you'll have orders to report to LeJeune or Pendleton for combat training. Combat training for NON-infantry MOS's (MCT) is roughly 3 weeks... the training is 3 weeks, but sometimes you have to wait a week to get into a platoon. For Infantry MOS's (ITB) I think it's about 6 weeks long. For either one, you'll have liberty on weekends (in some fashion) and you will be able to move around the base during liberty and make phone calls, buy stuff at the MCX and commissary, etc... At Pendleton cell phone service is sort of limited... depending on what cell service you have. I'm not sure about LeJeune.. but my son is stationed near there and gets great reception... so it shouldn't be a problem.
For all kinds of great info on Boot, MCT, ITB, and beyond, check out http://www.marineparents.com It's a great website for loved-ones of Recruits and Marines, and it's full of information, links, a chat room, and message boards... the folks there will welcome you and your family with open arms, and help ya'll through the process of becoming a Marine! It was a lifesaver for me when my son went through Boot.

May have changed in 25 years since I was in, but the answer then was maybe no time would be spent at Pendleton or Lejeune. You would be assigned to some school to be trained in your MOS. That could be at a Navy base such as Millington, TN or elsewhere. At the school, there is regular liberty and making phone calls on personal time is no problem.

Well on after MCT and how long that takes for your MOS. There is no set time for how long you could be at a certain base. You could also be sent to Okinawa or Iawkuni Japan. There are more bases than just Lejuene or Pendleton.

you are sent off to the base where they teach you whatever it is you signed up to be. it could be anywhere. Yes, you are much more free to stay in contact with family, but still required to put in your time training. After you complete your mos (however long that takes) you can then be sent off to just about anywhere your needed.

No, not until you finish your four years !
They don't want the enemy finding out where you are.
