Academy Sporting Goods has Mossberg ATR-100 bolt action rifles in several different calibers including .243 for under $300 bucks. This is a brand new rifle not a pawn gun thats been bubba'd by 10 different people. I will post a link.

If this is your first deer rifle I would advise against an auto. Learning to make your first shot count is what's important. There is nothing wrong with the .243 at all. My first deer rifle was a .250 Savage that I still use today, a few decades later. It has taken some pretty darn big deer over the years. I now have many other calibers but it's still one of my favorites. Not knowing where you'll be hunting does make it a little hard to answer completely though. If your hunting on the plains for mule deer and needing to make some longer shots I'd go with the .270 or a little in between like the .25-06. Just about anywhere else the .243 would be great. Model wise, you've got a fairly good variety with $700.00. There are some nice Rem. 700's, Savages, etc.

go to a gun shop and look at a H&R handi-rifle (single shot break action) order one in .243...get it with the bull barrell........when all is said and done you have half the recoil of a 12 gauge........then also consider...that the factory can fit new barrells for the gun......so its just a matter oif unscrewing the forearm and adding a new barrell anything from a .22 hornet to a deer slug barrell to a .45/70.
when you consider a new caliber look at the new leverrevolution ammo from Horndary ,it sort of takes the 30/30
and takes it from a 150 yard round to a solid 300 yard round.
they have new 45/70 and .308 ammo I know about, I'm sure there is more.
just think ........if you think your going to need three quick shots to go hunting......if the first does not hit, why would the second shot be any closer.........and the third shot....thats just a hail mary pass.......
look at greybeardsoutdoors.com message board , some of the guys over there are fanatics over this gun

You pretty much need to go to a store that has a license to sell guns. Sporting goods store, pawn shop, some Wal-Marts and K-Marts even. You can buy them on the Internet, but you have to have them shipped to someplace that has a license anyway.
If you're looking for recomendations, the Stevens (made by Savage) 200 is a pretty good shooting gun, and they're about the cheapest you can find. We sell them new for $289.99.

Wal Mart is going to stop selling guns. I would go to the nearest gunshop. Tell the person what you are looking for. And have them set you up

Try looking to buy one at your local firearms dealer. If you do not have one local, try getting an account on ''gunbroker. com''.
