It can be a misleading term. It doesn't grammatically have a negative connotation, but in actual usage it usually refers to human efforts to get right with God. These are based on a set of rules that differs from some other little group with a different set of rules which produces pride and suspicion between the groups. The result too often is exactly the opposite of what God desires - for all men to live together in peace and harmony and mutual respect, treating others as they themselves wish to be treated, and honoring God above all.
I have found it to be true in my own experience that there are really only two religions in the world - the religion of Man and the religion of God. The religion of man is based on earning God's blessings by good works. The religion of God says: "You cannot earn My favor, but I (God) freely bestow it upon you as an undeserved gift, because of My great goodness." This eliminates boasting, puts all men on equal footing as sinners before God deserving His mercy, and the result will be Heaven will be filled with those who know they are there through no merits of their own, but simply because of the great goodness of God.

I am assuming you are referring to religion in general.
When people get involved in religiosity, a sense of belonging comes into play. Religion by all accounts is not a good thing unless you abide by the rules, regulations and their guidelines. If you were asking a question concerning a relationship with God, that would be similar but yet so very different. In fact a relationship is more appropriate for God and those that accept Jesus as the Messiah. From the Time of Genesis to the ministry of Jesus, the intention was a relationship of love, acceptance and understanding.

Religion, to me, is a heartfelt attempt to purify one's soul, understand the nature of the universe, become closer to God and more useful and loving towards mankind. Religion comprises belief systems that are sincere and heartfelt.
Hypocrisy is when people attend religious organisations without any sincere desire to make any of the above personal changes.

The world "religion" itself has gotten a bad rap. Religions are just organized forms of Spirituality.

I am a Christian, but I am against religion. To me, having a relationship with God is one thing, and having a set of man-made rules is quite another! For instance, I am non-denominational, but my husband is Lutheran. At the Lutheran church, I am not allowed to take communion because I am not a member of the church. That is absolutely ridiculous. Communion is between a person and God, and quite frankly the church has nothing to do with it and no right to say who can and can't have it. When they deny someone communion, that makes it the church's communion instead of God's communion. That, I believe, is a perfect example of 'religion'-- man-made rules that actually have nothing to do with God.

1 - Religion gets in the way of people's relationship with God.
2 - It's been used as an excuse for just about everything evil in this world.
