Not well AT ALL. In fact, I am sure there is some kind of survey or research that can give you the numbers on how many people make this mistake. The internet is a 'sure fire way' of covering up one's mental, emotional, and physical self. You can type whatever words you want on a page - but until you meet someone (hopefully introduced by someone else that you know WELL), spend time with them in group settings, pairs, family, church, social, professional, when they are ill, or you, employment habits, etc. you will never, really know them.
And to be honest - you can be with someone 10 years and think you 'know' them and still find new and interesting things about them.
Personally, I believe the internet is not a good way to meet people other than 'casuallly' and with the intent to stay INTERNET and not cross the line. You don't know who some of these predators are. People are so good about lying that you can be taken up so quickly believing someone and finding yourself in a twist that you don't know how to get out of. Especially beware of people who want information from you about your family, your income, financial status, etc.

It depends.
I never talked to one class mate before (we were in the same class for like 6 years) , then I move to an other country (approx. 2000 km from home) and I got her Yahoo!Messenger ID 5 months ago , and we talk almost every day.
And a friend of mine never knew her , the got her ID , talked over the net and after a while they were lovers (brooked up after 2 weeks , what ever...)
Than I got a friend over YouTube... that I don't even know his gender ! (probably a boy) , but we talk a lot too , about video games , and cheats , FAQ's etc...
Than an other one who comes from a different country but speaks my language , and we are both immigrants in Italy. We play online NSF and chat.... etc . , etc......
So it depends where U meet that person (what kind of forum , chat , site ) and about what U talk whit it. Talking over the net sure can make U meet interesting people... a new love...... friends or A IDIOT OR A HACKER , so watch out !

I think you can learn a lot about a person just by the way they talk (or type I guess) if you look closely. But never be too sure.
