Well invited recently to a shooting range with my father and a friend, I've asked a few people before but never got a straight forward answer, so I will just ask here. Just exactly how loud is a gun? (pistol)

The shock wave and resulting sound produced by a firearm is dependent on several factors including it's caliber (cartridge) and configuration (barrel length, etc)
It would range from about: db(decibel)
70-75db for a .22lr rifle or pistol
up to
120-150db for Magnum pistols and rifles
The DB rating from the front row of most rock concerts is in the 100-120db range.
Also, the sharp shock wave created by almost ALL firearms discharges WILL damage hearing, sooner or later, depending on the length of poorly- or unprotected ears.

Probably not going to be a problem, since most good pistol ranges also have ear-protectors you can wear, and rules about wearing them when you're up at one of the stations on the firing line. Just imagine not just you, your dad and a buddy, but 10 other shooters firing away? One gun isn't all that loud [.22 pistols just go 'poppp' like a really loud snapping sound] but 10 to 15 shooters with perhaps larger guns would be pretty distracting. It's still macho to wear protectors--and it may be the rules of the range!

It is loud, even a 22. If you are going to the range there will be people firing other guns some might be big with brakes (which make guns ungodly loud). Take hearing protection it makes for a better experience and better shooting.

Uh... a 22 pistol is louder than a 22 rifle at least from the shooters perspective. It is definitely louder than a pop.

Sterling doesnt know what hes talking about when he says that rifles are louder than pistols. With a pistol the point of exit is closer to you than with a rifle. I shoot guns a lot and hunt also. I would much rather not wear ear protection shooting a .243 than a 9mm 10 times. But no matter what your shooting even a .22, if your going to shoot numerous times you should have ear plugs or muffs.

Always wear ear protection....even when shooting .22s. I'm just in my 40s and already have some hearing loss due to firearms, artillery and loud rock music, just ask my wife!

That depends on what caliber you're shooting (.22 LR vs .45 ACP for example) but handguns usually aren't as loud as most people would think they are. The noise certainly isn't intolerable. It sounds like a "pop". Rifles are usually a lot noisier.

If you're going to a gun range, then you're going to be wearing some for of hearing protection anyway, like ear plugs or ear muffs.

Have fun!

That really depends on the style and caliber of the gun. Obviously, the larger the caliber the more powder is exploding. To be on the safe side, I'd suggest you where ear protection.

It depends on the length of the barrel. The shorter it is, the louder it is.
