YES! Beagles are great! I got my beagle, Abby when I was ten and now shes 13 and going strong. I think she is a great dog. We introduced my baby nephew to her when she was 10 and even though she wasn't socialized with babies or kids that much she didn't mind him. (She pretty much ignores him) They don't require much exercise, but they like a good walk and a large backyard to run around if they want. She is so loving and friendly to everyone she meets, but she is also a good watchdog especially when I would be home alone... she would bark her head off if someone rang the bell or came into the yard. Since beagles are small I think they are nice for young kids.. big dogs don't know their size. She sheds but not horribly. Luckily we haven't had many health problems except now she has back problems every now and then and she's going deaf. (But she is 13!)
She is also VERY smart.. almost to a fault. We taught her to sit up with her paws in the air at the command "This is a stickup put your paws up!" and when we say "bang bang" she plays dead! She also figured out how to open the fridge! Books say they are hard to train... well not with yummy treats. Ours was housebroken completely in two weeks.
Word of caution - This breed likes to eat. They say beagles are "motivated by food" what an understatement! DO NOT feed your beagle table scraps. You will be creating a monster. She will beg and howl and paw anyone with food. My beagle when she was hungry would take her plastic bowl the down the stairs jump on my mom's lap and hit her with the bowl! They are also dogs that if given the chance would eat themselves to death... they don't know when to stop. And yes they are very very vocal... so teach it the command "quiet".
And don't let a beagle off the leash...ever. they will get a scent in their noses and take off without even listening to you... in an enclosed area its actually cool to watch her pick up a scent and go for it.
Get a beagle but do a lot of research to make sure shes right for you
Good Luck

I have had beagles since I was a child. I am currently owned by several. Beagles are wonderful family dogs because they are a nice size to be a house pet, but they are very sturdy and generally extremely healthy. They have wonderful temperaments which makes them good with children and other pets as well.
Because beagles are scent hounds, they will follow their nose and can be quite independent, however they are extremely intelligent and will learn very easily. They require firm, consistent handling/training and also a securely fenced area in which to run and play. They shed, however, with regular brushing and bathing that can be managed. I have found that housetraining goes much smoother and quicker if you use the crate training method (see source below).
I have owned several breeds of dogs and feel a beagle is a perfect choice for a family with small children, as long as you are willing to spend time with the dog. Beagles do not adapt well if left alone for longs periods of time. They are very loyal and like to spend time with their family!
If you decide a beagle is right for you, please inquire with a beagle rescue group, shelter, or a REPUTABLE breeder. Rescue groups and shelters cannot always provide info such as health history, but there are many nice beagles that are in need of good homes. Reputable breeders should be able to give you health history of your puppy's sire and dam. Look for a breeder who completes OFA & CERF health testing.

with any luck you do not have a "pocket" beagle. they seem to be a manufactured from undesirable breeding behavior, that purely breed for the small length and not for wellbeing. there are 2 height classes interior the genuine beagle breed, one being between thirteen-15 inches, and the different being under thirteen inches. I truly have got here across those "pocket" beagles to be bred with chihuahuas to get the small length, however the beagle shade, so some are no longer even organic bred beagles, yet mutts. did you spot the mothers and dads, did they fall interior the time-honored height variety, if so you are able to base the dimensions of your domestic dog by ability of what they regarded like, provide or take a inch or 2

My beagle is great with even 1 year olds. He is not all that smart- but was housebroken when I got him so he must be okay. He is very nice to all other dogs, cats, and all people. He is very loving and doesn't bark all that often.
He is a beagle mix though- not a purebred. I got him from the pound.

You can get a rescue dog for less than $1000.
Most rescue puppies are around 130 to cover the cost of vaccination
Adult rescue dogs are around 200
Elderly dogs are even cheaper
NEVER BUY FROM A PET STORE.
Getting adult dog you'll already know whether it gets along well with young children!
Personally I think under 5 is abit too young to have a dog. Over the age of 8yrs is a better idea-as 8yr old tend to more responsible and less likely to hurt the animal. Where as puppies will nip and may accidently hurt the young child without meaning too no matter what breed they are.

They are great little dogs. Mine is a freak of nature. He just grew and grew and grew so he ended up about twice the size a Beagle should be. People are always saying they are pretty noisy, but mine is the last of my three dogs to bark at something going on and sometimes does not join in. But when he does he is the loudest

Why would you want a short haired dog that sheds constantly with small children? Rethink this!! A beagle is for hunting, it tracks down rabbits and racoons. Yes, they are cute. But they also are extremely active and bark alot!! let alone the shedding.
Consider a family friendly dog...... Shih Tzu, Labrador, Minature Poodle, Golden Retriever (two of these are also shedding dogs)
Good Luck!!

Beagles are awesome. They are the best breed out of all dogs. They can often be loud barking, but if you keep him/her good company, they will not bark as much.
