Most such people are busybodyish jerks having no lives who butt unwanted into other people's business. No matter *what* religion is involved.
As far as I'm concerned, there are only two sensible ways to proselytize, and both of them are passive.
(1) Share one's faith with others only when others ASK them to.
(2) Silently offer tracts, or leave them in public places, so that in either case, people have the hassle-free chance to pass them up.

The real problem is that 90% of the people who say their religion is correct, haven't the foggiest notion why this is so. The result is a total lack of credibility.
And yes, you're right. It's become an advertising campaign aimed at people's emotions rather than an determined look at fact and reason.

Not really sure. Even as a Christian I get turned off by people who cannot respect the denomination that I have chosen and feel they have to convince me that their way is the right way.
I prefer to follow in the words of St. Francis... preach the Gospel at all times, and use words only when necessary.
If people want to know about my beliefs or ask why I do the things I do, I will happily answer them and ask if they would like to learn more. Heck, I'll even invite them to go to Divine Service with me! But, if they say no, then I step back and accept their answer.

It's never been a way to find answers, it's always been a way of interpreting the world. Nothing more, nothing less. After all, you can look to god all you want, but if you don't do the scientific research you'll never find a cure for AIDS or any other disease.
As for why people try to convince others, peer pressure is a b*tch and that's what's been practiced for millenia.

Because there is a teaching that one should not believe-you have to spread the teaching to get the reward like heaven. But you never know the feeling of people that you are trying to convince. Sometimes they are not happy with your words.

I spend my time trying to convince others to keep their religion out of our government and our schools.

Only GOD can come into your heart and make a difference in someone's life .I have known about GOD all my life ,but to really know him is a different story .It's hard to tell someone how wonderful it is .It's not a religion it's a way of life.

Personally, I don't try to convince people my religion is the correct one. I just want to be able to teach them what the Bible says. Then they can decide for themselves.
