My dog (7 months) recently sprained his leg (2 weeks ago). My vet is on vacation so I cannot ask when he will be able to go for a walk again. He was under the vets care and has been treated conventionally and holistically and has received some chiropractic care. Just curious as to how long I should wait. Thanks!

Sprains in humans can take as long as 6 months to heal entirely. Don't take your dog running or for long walks. Start out with slow, short walks to allow your dog to start rebuilding strength in the injured leg. And call your vet when he gets back for further instructions.

Just wait until the dog is walking comfortably, then let him decide how far and how fast he walks. If he starts to look tired or uncomfortable at all, pick him up. Sprains are not serious and just need a little time. As long as the dog is not limping, then it is fine to walk him. Just remember to start off slow and don;t go very far until you work him up to it over a period of time.

Is there a back-up vet at the clinic you can talk to? Usually vets don't leave without having a back-up to take care of things. If not, call another vet and explain the situation.

Once you see that your dog can walk without pain, start taking him out. Start for short walks and then gradually get longer. The amount of time depends on how fast the dogs pain goes away.
