I have a very large (80 gallon, 6' tall) hot water heater in the corner of my laundry room. It looks really ugly and out of place. I would like to hide it from view without closing it off permanently. Does anyone have any good ideas?

Try pricing out a tall hinged two panel louver shutter so you will still have ventilation. Or, maybe you could purchase a curved rod to attach to the ceiling and hang some fabric panels which would need to be fire retardant.

Pick up some narrow doors at a garage sale; or some louvered doors, and hinge 3 of them together ; Stand in front of the heater; You can even make some yourlelf out of lattice work (4x8 sheets) and staple yard goods either in front or in back of them ; if you don*t want them that big two should work. Hope this helps

The operative word should be "fire proof". I would probably make a screen with steel angles on casters and cover with sheet metal or drywall. The former would add less weight and either could be painted to match/compliment your decor. You did not mention whether the heater is electric or gas, but either can be somewhat of a hazard-the above would work in either case.

Buy, make or have made an oriental type shoji folding floor screen. If you are handy, some wood framing, hinges, and some fabric of your choice will make an attractive option.
