it means if you sit around waiting for God to do something for you He isnt as likely to help you as He would be if you were actually trying to help yourself.

"God helps those who help themselves" is not in the Bible at all. For one the Bible talks about helping others because others are more important than one's self (Philippians 2:3 and 1 Peter 4:10). Secondly God does things that we can not see (Job 9:5). Thirdly the Bible has to be true for the God of the Bible to be real. Of course I believe He's real because something without life can not create something with life. Something without intelligence can not create something with intelligence.

Im not big on cute sayings but this one is trying to say that while God will help, he wont do the entire job for you. You have to do your part, God does his.
Another saying (that Im not crazy about): If you're hungry, good luck with locking yourself in a closet and praying for a hot dog.

It's a pretty complex, if pithy, aphorism by Benjamin Franklin. With the tendency of religious people to claim the help of divine agencies when their problems are solved, coupled with the tendency of people who actively work to solve those problems finding themselves rid of them, it is a very apt observation.

That saying is an old saying that is definitely not in the Bible. In fact, God tells us that He is our strength in weakness. When we have no recourse, when we turn to him "He is an ever present help in times of trouble."
Only mothers tell kids that God helps those who help themselves to motivate their children to accomplish something.
Usually when God steps in and helps, it is so obvious that we are amazed and delighted. He is quite clever at doing stuff we can't manage on our own.

it is actually about learning to pray. does not contradict the Bible as some might say as it is not in the Bible verbatim. if people are having money problems--God is not just going to POOF you a million bucks. you pay for the perseverence and strength to work hard enough to meet your needs. he helps with strength and hope, while you do the work. basically asking you to re-evaluate the root cause of your needs before you pray.

God supplies strength so a person can practice their virtues and make them stronger and in so doing conquer the sin. It is like a muscle you need to exercise it to make it stronger.
