Carpel tunnel syndrome is where the nerves that run through the wrist into the hand are either inflammed (mild cts) or being compressed by a thickend ligament (moderate cts). The ligament is at the base of your palm. The tunnel the nerves run through is the carpel tunnel. Syptoms of CTS include weakness and numbness in the fingers (usually starting with the pinky and slowly spreads towards the thumb as it gets worse) and soreness in the wrist.

If you are having problems only twice a year, chances are it's not CTS. With CTS your symptoms would occur more frequently. It's possible that you are just over using it occasionally and that is causing problems.
CTS is diagnosed with a nerve conduction study to determine if there is an interruption in the nerve impulses to the hand. If there is, the only fix is surgery - they go in and cut the tendon through a small incision. The tendon will heal itself, when it does it is slightly longer, giving more room for the nerves to pass into the hand without being compressed. However, the first step is to use special wrist braces that have a metal piece in the wrist to help support the hand/wrist - you can purchase these at any store you can get ace bandages.

CTS can be serious and disruptive, causing the individual to wake up at night and be unable to complete certain tasks.

If you are really concerned, try taking some advil (for inflammation) and using the braces when needed. If it continues to get worse, see your physician.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, is an inflammation of the tendons, in the wrist that control flexion of the fingers. The tendon gets inflamed and, since it runs through a tendon sheath that encloses it, it swells too big for the sheath and causes pain. It can be serious if it is a chronic issue (constant pain and sensation issues). If it is a once or twice a year thing, just figure what actions are causing it (more activity at those times than others, or different activity perhaps) and stop those actions for a while. Asprin and ibuprofin can be used to relieve inflammation. You may need to see a doctor but, the problem seems to be a temporary one.
Carpal tunnel release (the surgery) is used to relieve the pain and such from chronic CTS. They go in and cut the top off of the tendon sheath, which relieves the tension on the tendon.

if it is your first finger, it sounds more like "trigger finger" and not carpal tunnel. Carpal tunnel presents more with numbness in the hand, pain, and isn't just a one or twice a year thing. It grows to be constant very quickly. Trigger finger is easily treated. First, by injection, and if it worsens, a simple quick surgical proceedure takes care of it permanently. I have it, it started a couple of years ago, and I'm just waiting till I feel it is bad enough to warrant the surgery before I have it done.
Good luck

It depends on how often you pleasure yourself. If it is a lot I would say carpel tunnel is serious.
