Does anyone know under what circumstances the army would "cancel" a soldiers planned leave a month before he was to take it?

Yes. The unit commander can revoke leave at his discretion, generally he has a good reason for it.

Usually, it's a question of manning, i.e. the commander feels he needs more soldiers on duty than what he would have with that person on leave.

Occasionally, it might be as part of a punishment.

There's any number of reasons that a unit would cancel a soldier's leave. In the case of deployment, deployed soldiers don't typically get to go on leave during their deployment, with the exception of R&R or occasional emergency leave. The mission always comes first, however; and different operations can pop up and require as much manpower as the unit can muster, which often means cancellation or postponement of leave. Getting in trouble can also be a common cause of leave cancellation... which happens more often than the ones who get in trouble usually care to admit.

My husband's leave time changed 5 times before he got it. It was for different reasons...once because someone had a death in the family, once because someone had a baby come early and he asked to switch times with someone, and the others were because of people getting injured or having illnesses. One thing I've learned with dealing with the military...there are NO definites and plans can and will change (almost daily it seems!) So not to worry...his leave wasn't canceled...just postponed!

Shorter deployments get shorter R&R's... Marines, who are currently deploying for 7 months in the middle east, get a 4-day R&R about half way through.

As the company first sergeant, I took charge of the company leaves and had to change them sometimes due to mission requirements or other personnel situations immediately changing. I wasn't the most popular person when I had to do it but I briefed everyone before leaves started that it is all subject to change at any time. They were mostly glad just to get their leave.

they can and will deny or cancel it..for any reason. Mostly mission requirements or other situation where his going on leave would present a hardship to the unit.

Any circumstances that his commanding officer decides is reason enough. Leave is a privilege not a right.

Yes they can.

Needs of the Army and the mission at hand is all they need to say.

war or national emergency is all i know of unless the soldier gets in trouble before he/she goes on leave.

The Army can do pretty much what they want to.
