Matters not what the United States says about it at all. Speaking for the many people that I know and a host of others that I have read when the topic comes up - not a snowballs chance in hades will such happen. Citizens here are not going to allow it.
You have to remember that some states are a republic. Texas is a republic. We, Texas, were a nation before it decided to become a state.
I know of no citizen of Texas that is willing to even consider such an action. I know of no Texan that would even begin to allow such.
While some would indeed like to see a portion of the land in Crawford Texas have a major turnover of ownership from some that own land there - I know of none that would even consider giving such to any country, let alone Mexico.

Nobody is saying that the border states are going to be returned to Mexico, but you dummies!!
Three of these states are already Minority-Majority states, California, New Mexico and Texas. Which means the Anglos are no longer the Majority in those States. Minorities will be elected to state government and we will run the state government as still a part of America. Then the white flight will began.
Hey that how a Democracy works!!

Basically zero in the foreseable future. What might well happen, though, is an increasing cultural union between the states on both sides of the border. That is, the peoples of Arizona and Sonora, say, may over time, come to find that they have much more in common with eachother than with Washington DC or Mexico DF.

While it is fairly obvious that Mexico could never "take" back the southern States by force, they are obviously going to do it by moving in one person at a time, not learning English, insisting (through lawsuits) on their "rights" and will eventually get those states back, that way. Every town you see that was culturally American 10 years ago, and is now "mexican": mostly spanish-speaking, large percentage of non-english speaking children in the public schools, services geared towards serving non-english speakers, Anglo "movers and shakers" insisting that the immigration status of people is of no concern to the authorities, newspaper editorials that are pro (illegal) immigration, and anti-enforcement, etc. is an example of how this slow takeover is happening.
Like a frog being slowly cooked in a pot on a stove- the heat being turned up incrementally beneath him until, even when he finally realizes what is happening, he is too late to jump out and save himself- we will see our border states slowly "mexicanized" until they are defacto "returned to Mexico."
WithOUT a single shot being fired.

Absolutely not. Do you really think the people of this country would give up our land? NO.
That's a war I would fight happily, and there will be a war if they try to take over.

Sounds extremely far-fetched.
Do you have any kind of proof to back up these rumors? Who, exactly, is saying them?
I've never heard that outside of this question.
