The Old Testament teaches life after death, and that all people went to a place of conscious existence called Sheol. The wicked were there (Psalm 9:17; 31:17; 49:14; Isaiah 5:14), and so were the righteous (Genesis 37:35; Job 14:13; Psalm 6:5; 16:10; 88:3; Isaiah 38:10).
The New Testament equivalent of Sheol is Hades. Prior to Christ’s resurrection, Luke 16:19-31 shows Hades to be divided into two realms: a place of comfort where Lazarus was, and a place of torment where the rich man was. The word hell in verse 23 is not “Gehenna” (place of eternal torment) but “Hades” (place of the dead). Lazarus’s place of comfort is elsewhere called Paradise (Luke 23:43). Between these two districts of Hades is “a great gulf fixed” (Luke 16:26).
Jesus is described as having descended into Hades after His death (Acts 2:27, 31; cf. Ephesians 4:9). At the resurrection of Jesus Christ, it seems that the believers in Hades (i.e., the occupants of Paradise) were moved to another location. Now, Paradise is above rather than below (2 Corinthians 12:2-4).
Today, when a believer dies, he is “present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:6-9). When an unbeliever dies, he follows the Old Testament unbelievers to Hades. At the final judgment, Hades will be emptied before the Great White Throne, where its occupants will be judged prior to entering the lake of fire (Revelation 20:13-15).

There is no "pre jesus" cause he never existed as an historical living person. "Jesus" is a mind set recognizing the divinity within yourself. Honestly, look at the historical evidence from an unbias view and you will have a hard time proving that Jesus existed. The Jesus story is a reworking of the old dying and reborn god story through out history and cultural groups. We must remember that "names" are not things in themselves, and that things can be referenced by more than one name. Read Tom Harpur's Pagan Christ, or the Historical Jesus and the Mythical Christ by Gerald Massey. If your really into it find the Sacred Mushroom and the Cross by John Allegro.

The center of History is the life, death and resurrection of Christ. Before Christ resurrected and ascended into heaven the souls of good people when to "Abraham's Bossom." The souls of the damned went to hell. Abraham's bossom was a holding place from the time of Adam and Eve until Christ. Christ freed the souls in Abraham's Bosom.
When the Bible says that Jesus ascended into Hell, the english is not quit right. Jesus ascended to Abraham's Bosom. Hell is eternal and there was no need of Christ to ascend there.
When Jesus Ascended into Heaven the gates of heaven were open and the souls of "just' ascended with him.

Friend: Jesus has nothing to do with Hell. He has everything to do with life. There is no physical Hell. When we move from the physical world to the Spiritual, we are in God's absoluite domain. God decides where our spirits spend eternity. So I don't worry about Heaven or Hell. I just worry about Here!

No..they did not.
But they were judged by what they did for Yahweh, &
if they obeyed Mose's law all their lives. God knew
and read the true heart of man, so it was "balance the scales".
Repentance of sin.
Good against evil.
Good for God's sake outweighing the bad.
Before Jesus...Jews were judged under the laws of Moses.
After Jesus...mankind was under grace of Jesus sacrifice for everyone.
When the Jews denied Jesus was their Messiah,
it opened the door for the Gentile & Black races who did accept Jesus, to be offered the choice and chance of being grafted into the family of Almighty God with the Jews & offered salvation for repentance of sin & acceptance of Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.

Apparently once Jesus had sacrificed himself, the gates of Heaven opened and souls were freed from Hell.

I think that hell only is possible after judgement day... which hasn't happened yet.
I must point out though, even though Jesus saves, many will still go to Hell.
God Bless You.

People go to Pergatory first. Hell/Heaven is where people will go after Jesus returns. Until then, They wait in Pergatory.
