If you are having so much difficulty making a simple decision such as this I suggest you not join any of the services. All have one thing in common; they require people who are smart, motivated and able to make the right decisions.
Tattoo or no tattoo. How ridiculous!

If the recruiter is telling you that need to get it removed, then that is what you must do if you want join the Coast Guard. You can ask the recruiter to see the regs, but trust me, the Coast Guard are not hurting for personal, so there is no reason for him to lie about this. Besides, if you want to get the tat again you can always get it again in the future depending on what removal process you decide on. I would not believe that this is a sign, merely something you need to do if this is an important path for you. Being military can have so many advantages that would be well work getting a tat removed for. One other thing, the Coast Guard is now patroling waters in the Middle East, so if you think you are joining the Coast Guard just to stay in the State, that may not be the case, do some more research.

Truthfully, I don't think anyone can answer this except you.
Why did you get the tattoo? Is it special to you? Does it have great meaning or in tribute of someone who passed away that you loved? It's really all about how much you love your ink. I would never remove any of my tattoos for ANYONE. They are all symbolic of things in my life and they are who I am.
The decision is really yours. Do you want to join the Coast Guard so badly that you'd remove something you wanted and most likely spent a great deal of money on? The decision is yours.

I know that even the Army will accept people with neck tattoos! If the Coast Guard is really really important to you then I'd say yes remove it, if its not, then consider another branch or another career path.

I never heard of such a rule. Tell her you would like to see the documentation which restricts individuals with tatoos. I know it's against regulations for anyone in any branch of the service to get a tatoo even though a lot of people ignore it and get them anyway but if you already have them I don't believe they can refuse to allow you to enlist. After you enlist and get one they only prosecute the ones who require medical attention as a direct result of infection from the tatoo.

If the tattoo makes you you than don't get rid of it there are lot more jobs out there. But if the tattoo isn't really special than get rid of it if that's the job you have dreamed of.
