I found a egg in a nest with three eggs near it, it must have dropped and the three eggs fell out but one remained in the egg. It has a really tiny hole in it, must be a crack, and i didnt want it to die so i brought it and put it under a lamp to keep warm and ive been turning it every couple hours. Im not sure if the egg is still alive or not. Is there any way I can tell or jsut keep it under the lamp for a couple days?

The light under trick isn't always a certain way to tell. I know because I once cracked open an egg that appeared to be dead...only to find a living baby bird in it, nearly ready to hatch.

Just keep it warm and turn it, and smell it. If it starts to stink, it's safe to say it's dead.
Put it on top of torn-up tissue paper/paper-towel.

If it's alive and hatches, and you plan to feed it, you'll need to get a syringe and baby-bird food powder.

Absolutely keep it in the dark, but keep it warm. A direct heat lamp will dehydrate it and kill it. To determine if it is too warm, feel the space that it is in. If it is warm enough that you would eventually perspire if you were that warm, it is too hot. It should be noticeably warmer than the room, though. About 85F is right. To be honest, if it has hatched prematurely, it is very unlikely that the bird will survive. If it will take water from a dropper, give it a few drops, but no more than 3 drops per hour. Hope things turn out well; you're very sweet to try to help it. Good luck! Edit - Do NOT leave a bowl of water near it. If the bird does hatch, you should be able to feed it and give it water until it is grown enough to make it on its own. However, baby birds do not walk well, and are likely to drown themselves by trying to drink from an open dish. To feed a newly-hatched bird, use a toothpick to feed it pieces of scrambled egg dipped in water. This sounds a little sick, but eggs natrually have everything a bird needs to grow, and the water will help keep it hydrated. I would also put a shallow dish (lid of a jar) in the pen and fill it with pebbles, then fill with water until the water level is just below the tops of the pebbles. That eliminates the drowning problem, and prevents the bird from getting sick from getting too wet if it wanders into it. Hope this helps!

the light trick does not work i had a goose that layed eggs that were all fertile and i did the light thing and i couldnt see anything but they hatched and lived if the membrane isnt torn then it should live if it is it might die but it still has a little bit of a chance. just leave it under the warm light and i know im just saying what the person before me said but i do know this from personal experience and from a vet. i just dont want you to think that the people that say it wont live and the people that say the light trick works are right.

Grab a light and put it under it. You can see in the egg. If there is something in it. it will be moving. If not it is dead

If you shine a light through it you may be able to see if there is anything growing inside, but if it does hatch, the chick will die. Let nature take it's course. Sorry.

More than likely it's dead. Sorry......just let it go. You'd know if there was life in it....it would be moving around.
