Religious people don't mind pushing their ideas on the rest of us, so push back before it's too late and they take control.
My guess is there's a lot of people looking for a reason NOT to believe. Give it to them.

Of course there is not just one simple cure.
Education would definitely be part of it. This would need to include both a real scientific education and an education on coping with reality - something that taught people who needed to delude themselves into taking some responsibility for their actions and learning to cope with suffering as a normal part of life. I am not exactly sure how this would work but really something like this would probably be necessary.
Sticking to separation of church and state, (or more generally keeping all religion out of politics for countries other than the U.S), would help.
More atheists admitting that they were atheists and being willing to talk (though not lecture or preach) about why they do not believe there is a god.
That said if religion did not exist there would be likely be even more belief in conspiracy theories, aliens having visited, ghosts etc.......people just seem to like this stuff...though maybe the education part could clear those up too......
It is unlikely it will ever happen, even if it does it will not be in our lifetime.....
