Is there a rule? I'm trying to get a modern cozy look? What types of flowers can I use?

You should always use an odd number when decorating. For example, 1or 3 vases might look good on the same piece of furniture, but never 2 or 4. Where they're placed depends on their height. Very talls ones go on the floor, large ones on short tables, short ones on regular tables, small ones in a cabinet or near the ceiling.

It depends on the room you are placing them in and the size of the tables. You can do high/low vases with various stems. I also like small square vases with glass stones in which I cut the flowers down to make tight little tussies in different flower groups of similar colors. I change them out each week but I have a specific room or rooms I do them in. If you are very contemporary and have the space, large stems in tall vases are really commanding. Contemporary stems can be tall Calla lilies or any tall sparsely used blooms that create drama and minimalism. What is common to your area? Play with it and see what works. It's supposed to be fun and what makes you feel happy.

hard to say without seeing your room. but suggestions anyway: if u have a coffee table put a tall, wider at the top glass vase full of your color choice of one type of flower ( ex: roses, poppies, iris). the flowers should be at least 2 1/2 times taller than the vase. then put a greenery bush ( very full, ex. like ivy) in a diagonal corner ( on a entertainment center of something about that height) and that should do it unless your room is a ballroom or something really large!

the universal rule is SCALE. to deepen this answer, I ought to say scale and balance.... all decor must be the correct scale. stepping back can easily help you see if something is too paltry (e.g. too small) or too domineering (e.g. too large)

don't forget the power of groupings (e.g. groupings of 3) or PAIRS for the romantics out there. groupings and especially pairs are good to spark conversation

(allium is a nice modern looking flower, it's round)
