I received a voice mail message on my cell phone over the weekend from an employer (Company A) who interviewed me last Friday morning. The company offered me the job. I was caught completely off guard as the main interviewer said that the decision to hire for the position would be made in a week after they interview several other people for the opening. The problem is that I have another job interview (Company B) tomorrow afternoon. How do I hold off the first offer until I can speak with the other company? Especially what should I tell Company A?

Is it bad at all to tell Company A that I have another job interview tomorrow and that I will make my decision after meeting with the other company or Company B?

Hold off. Then you can compare offers and benefits.
Tell them you need a little time to consider your options.

Just call back Company A and ask how quickly they need an answer. Tell them you need to discuss it with your family or significant other first and ask for a day or so to decide.

Do NOT tell them that you're interviewing with another company! They'll probably just withdraw the offer and move on to the next candidate.

It might be appropriate to tell Company B (at the end of the interview if it went very well) that you just received an offer from another company while you were on your way over to the interview and let them know that you need to make a quick decision.

You need to ask yourself several questions:

1. Do you want to work for Company A? Is the job interesting, the people and workplace compatible with your personality, etc.?
2. Is the pay, benefits, and promotion/advancement opportunities all that you wanted at Company A?
3. Do you want to work for a company that makes a job offer in voicemail???????????? Why wouldn't the HR person just ask you to return his/her call so that he/she could discuss the job offer with you live? (Seems odd to me...)

I wouldn't even worry about your predicament until after your interview with Company B -- it may turn out that either you don't like them or vice versa.

If you DO like Company B and expect an offer from them, just tell Company A that you need a little more time to make a decision. Tell Company B that you are actively interviewing and expect offers from other companies (don't say that you already have one). They'll get the hint that they need to move fast if they want you.

If you find out that Company B is going to take a long time in their hiring process, and you want to work there, then you're just going to have to take a risk and turn down A in order to wait for B.

Good luck! :)

PS -- Isn't it nice to be wanted? :)

Call Co A and tell them you are meeting with other employers but you will get back to them on Monday (or whatever day you prefer) Dont make them wait over a week or you will lose that company and their offer.
Interview with company B and then compare the two. Take the one you feel best about and would be happy with. Happiness is far better than the money. The best job is the total package:
Money
Benefits
Good Work Environment
Nice employees and boss
Best Hours and Days
And best advancement

But I would say, BEST WORK ENVIRONMENT is most important. Anything else you can deal with. But if the work place is hostile, depressing, or cut-throat we will be miserable.

Good Luck

I think the best thing to do is to check out both by going to the interview, and then to make your decision. After all, such a interview is not only for the company to get to know the to-become-employee, but also for him to check out the company. I think a good company would understand en respect someone weighing the pro's and con's of several options against each other.

You don't have to take an offer right away. Keep getting those offers then make a final decision!
