Where to start. Do away with the top 35 in owners points being locked in. Make it more democratic... let the car/team owners have a say prior to the institution of new rules and changes that affect the sport. Set it up so that no one man (Brian France) is all-powerful. Do away with Nascar (Brian France) being able to have conflicting business interests that affect the sport. (He has affiliations with both Goodyear and Dupont with his marketing company) Publicize a set of rules and regulations and stop enforcing them arbitrarily. Set out a standard set of penalties for rules infractions rather than just making them up on an incident-to-incident basis. Make it more fan friendly. Place some value on the fans and not solely on revenue.
People don't realize that Nascar isn't an organization... it's a company OWNED solely by the France family. Scoob... I could go on and on. I've been watching this sport since the early 50's and unlike those who have been watching for three or four years, I remember what our sport used to be. When different manufacturers had a say in the design of their cars. It's become a field of "cookie-cut" cars with no difference other than the emblem on the hood. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but regardless of the popularity growth of the sport, the sport itself has suffered. Hell, it's more a business these days than the true sport it once was. Consider the fact that we're now watching more commercial than actual race. Is that more fan friendly than it was a few years ago??? I sure don't see it.

First, I would restructure the format for determining the Busch Series champion. With Kevin Harvick dominating last year and Carl this year the whole points system for the Busch Series has become obselete. They need to limit the number of races for full time cup drivers, implement a chase format or somehow combine both aspects. The biggest need for change in the Nextel Cup Series is in how the field is set for each race. When they went to the 35 car lock a couple of years back it didn't seem like that bad of an idea. Now there are 53 or more full time teams that travel to every track and attempt to make the show. The newer teams that need the most track time do not get that due to the pre practice inspection. They inspect the cars by where they are in the standings. This means Jeff Gordon is out on a track he's seen dozens of times before A.J Almendinger, for example. Then when it comes to the top 35 being locked in, that really penalizes very good teams that may not have the budget to attempt as many races. The fact that Boris Said had a pole at Daytona last year (and ran well), was sitting on the provisional pole this year and still didn't get in the Pepsi 400 is a travesty. I would say they need to lock the top 20 only and let everyone else race in on time. It may mean some bigger name drivers not racing but those are the breaks. I would also allow for 2 provisionals for previous year's top 10 and 1 for the last year's 11th-20th place drivers in the standings. One more thing I would do is to keep a stagger between positions when they enter the chase. I like the bonus for wins but don't think all the hard work earlier in the season should be wiped out when they get to the chase. I would like to see 10 points between all 12 positions and then add the win bonus.

Hmm..

1) Get rid of the top 35 rule and make it 20 or 25. That way more cars can get in but then others who are doing well don't have the chance to miss a race, which is why alot of people come to the races.
2) Take away the Busch race from Montreal. Go to Toronto, instead. Nothing is in Montreal anymore.
3) Get rid of NBC and TNT and do Fox Coverage, Speed, ESPN, all year long. You could also just do Fox all year round.
4) Change the rules for the COT. Allow the teams to work in gray areas.
5) Get rid of the Chase. Let them race till the end of the season without the points getting reset. That's just stupid. Bring back the $1 Million Dollar bonus.
6) Build a Speedway car, for like Daytona and Talladega, that way you can draft.. The COT you can't really draft with.
7) Get rid of that awful wing and splitter on the COT.
8) Give the car more downforce and find ways to make the car turn better.
9) Give points for pole positions, and more points for leading a lap and leading the most laps. 5 points for a lap and 15 for leading the most possibly?

Drop the top-35 rule. You get 2 attempts to qualify, if you don't make it, better luck next week. I'd keep one former champion's provisional though, purely for sentimental reasons (that cup oughta have some perks).

Drop the Chase. Yes, it's exciting seeing guys get a second chance, after being way behind, but it's too contrived. And a driver could win all of the first 26 races, then have bad luck 3 weeks in a row and be out of contention. The traditional format is fairer.

Shorten some races. The Daytona 500, Coke 600, and a few others have some history behind them, but there's no reason for every week's race to be a 6-hour affair. Lots of those 500s could be 300s and lose no entertainment value.

I like the 2 road-course races . . . Add 2 dirt-track races. Dirt tires allowed, any gear you like, no other changes to the car.

Add 2 quarter-mile drag races. Pro tree, drag slicks allowed, any gear you like, no other changes to the car. Yes, I'm really reaching here . . .

Make it harder for the full-time Cup guys to dominate Busch. Say if the Cup race is in Dover, have the Busch race in California that weekend. Or sometimes have the two races on the same day but different locations. Or make it a rule that for the last 10 races you can compete in one series or the other but not both.

The Busch cars need to look different from Cup machines. I read that they're thinking about using smaller bodystyles (Mustang/Camaro) in Busch in a few years. That might be neat.

Ok I just noticed a few things wrong with schizo, and papa's posts.
1. Schizo, the only problem is only Dodge makes a 8cyl RWD production mid-size, The Monte Carlo comes with a V-8 but is FWD, same as the Impala SS. Only Pontiac has a car that fits your criteria and NASCAR's(the Mustang and Corvette don't apply here.).
2. Papa, Merc and Buick you're kidding right those are the last 2 makes you want in NASCAR, why because they're supposed to go fast everytime I'm behind on of those things it's going 10-15 mph below the speed limit. And Olds oh come on Olds died 3 years ago(yes I know , I was saddened by that too).
As for rule changes, lose the top-35 thing, Boris got screwed.

first thing i would do is go back to the top ten drivers in the chase. not 12. not everyone's favorite driver can be in the chase. it's supposed to be the top 10 best not adding an additional 2 drivers every year. soon it will be a 42 car chase. also i would take a date away from pocono and give it to any other race. face it pocono is crappy. also i would stick with the same name. they switched to nextel, i finally got used to nextel and then they change it. and a final thing i would change the busch points system cause carl edwards is gonna win the championship by over 1,000 pts easily and that's not even cool at all. no problem with carl but 5 races into the season we know the busch champion. the way to fix that would be limiting the number of races a cup regular can drive the busch series to 5-10 races.

Scoob, I don't just have a few issues. I've got a whole subscription.

1. Lose the COT and the templates. I'm for a return to STOCK bodies, at least from the beltline up. Factory car would have to be V8, RWD.

2. Lose the cookie-cutter tracks. Make them different enough so you can tell where you are by something besides the name on the outside wall.

3. Limit teams to 2 cars. Of course, that won't stop them from putting cars in other peeps names...

4. Better broadcast package. Nascar was best in the days of ESPN, Bob Jenkins & Jerry Punch.

5. All cars qualify on speed, 2 rounds, NO provisionals. If you can't get in on 2 chances, you deserve to go home.

6. Mix up the Busch & Cup schedules. If these guys want to run both series, make them work for it.

There. I've vented enough for one night. I feel better now.

Plane and simple go back about 6 or 7 years and take on the rules that were in effect then. Maybe do away with the current champion getting his pit pick but that would be about it. Time were good back then.
I might start watching it again on a regular basis.
no chase
no green, white, checker. When the race is announced that it is going to be a certain amount of laps or miles then that is what it is going to be.
no 35 locked into the race. THAT MY FRIENDS IS OUTRAGEOUS
buy the France family out and deport them. Don't let them screw anything else up.
I like some ones idea of putting a governing body of past NASCAR drivers and let them re organize this mess.
There is more I'm suer but I need to get a bite to eat.

I would like them to get rid of the top 35 automatically in. Make everyone qualify for each event. In the event that a qualifying session is cancelled due to rain then you go by points. Top 43 are in.

I would also like to do away with the chase. Last year was proof of how it doesnt work right. Take the #20, he didnt make the chase. But how close was he at the end. (Yes I am a Stewart fan so I am biased but I feel it is a valid example.)

A car not passing pre race inspection is loaded back up and not allowed to race, and the entire crew is not allowed to participate. (yes including driver). If a car fails post race inspection then they are not allowed at the next event. I feel this would wake up the owners and sponsors, and the so called Gray Areas will go away.

I would also like to see cup drivers not be allowed to race in the Busch series. That is where the up and comming talent is. Stop busch wacking them.

Get rid of the top 35 locked into the race. Make everyone qualify on time. Maybe give every team a few provisionals to use throughout the year. If multiple teams are trying to use a provisional the highest in points at the time get it. I'm sure there would be several flaws with that but that's just off the top of my head.
