I work with big oil paintings that incorporate collage elements. The collage is fabric (old clothing) that I cut up and glue to the canvas with a paste called Yes Paste. I mix my oil paint with cold wax medium to make it thicker and more matte. My paintings are pretty heavily impastoed. One of my professors said he was worried about the fabric spontaneously combusting. Is there anything I can do to prevent this while keeping the collage intact?

Your painting will not combust.

No.

There is a process to make cotton very flammable even explosive (guncotton: check link below) but you will not do this by accident in using it in a collage.

Your professor is a nut for assuming it is even possible. Lets say chances of him 'spontaneously' combusting while smoking on the job is 1000 000 times bigger.
