Cassie, that one's no fun at all. I waked up the other night with my eyes snapping open at 2:30 A.M. Talk about feeling like an idiot! Usually when I wake up like that I feel a little anxious, and that is because I probably ate something stupid before retiring and it is getting its revenge. But when you just can't sleep, what I did was to wrap myself in the cover on my bed and sit on the edge of the bed and just get quiet inside. You know, blank my mind. Not blame myself for being awake. When you can't sleep, the whole thing hinges on what you are telling yourself. So do not upset yourself further by making a big deal out of it. Just say very little to yourself and sit there quietly and turn out the light and be quiet inside. In about fifteen minutes, you will begin to feel drowsy again. In about twenty minutes you can flop back into bed and just let sleep overtake you. The whole idea of getting back to sleep or finding sleep in the first place is not to dramatise it. No big deal. "Here I am just sitting on the edge of my bed. I am safe. I am not anxious. I will be asleep in just a few minutes. Breathe..." If you can just tone the whole thing down and tell yourself something pleasant like that, in a very short interval, sleep will come.

You can get a lavendar pillow spray from Avon and it does help some (me ) I also count from 500 backwards in my head, not aloud because you have to think hard to find out what number you are up to.
Be aware there could be a problem so you may have to see a doctor and have a word with him or her.
Worry, pain, bed too warm or cold, needing a window open a little because the air is stale are other reasons for not sleeping. Hope this helps, goodnight, sleep tight.

Hi Cassie--
As a longtime insomniac, I've tried just about everything under the sun, to greater or less degrees of success. What I recommend is first start off with non-medicinal approaches, such as avoiding anything stimulating to your eyes and ears for at least an hour before going to bed. No TV, music, and the like. Go for a short walk outdoors if the temperature is pleasant. Melatonin is also available over-the-counter as a natural sleep enhancer. If this doesn't work...
...then try low-grade medicinals, such as Nytol (diphenhydramine) or Dramamine (dimenhydrinate) about 30 minutes before bedtime. However, be aware that either of these, while their main effect is causing drowsiness, they may also cause a "paradoxical effect", or make you feel wired or restless while drowsy (a truly strange sensation). If this doesn't work...
...it's doctor time. If you have no psychiatric issues (such as anxiety, depression, etc), your doc can recommend a prescription sleep aid such as Ambien or Lunesta. If anxiety is at the root of your sleeplessness, they may also (or in lieu of) prescribe an anxiolytic like Ativan (lorazepam) or Klonopin (clonazepam) to help you relax. Note that especially as pertains to these last measures, they should be considered as temporary, and be used only until you can fall into a successful routine of non-medicinally induced sleep.
Best of luck.

sleeping pills like restil and calmpose are fairly common in most urban homes as more and more people are getting affected by sleeplessness. The root cause of which is stress. However, consuming medicines like these in not only harmful but also not effective to treat the root cause of the problem. Ayurveda has known this condition since ancient times and has some excellent solutions which strengthens the nervous system, calms the disturbed mind and regulate hormones to induce sleep naturally. Thus ayurveda has perfect recipe for completely safe & effective natural sleeping tablets. Mind is responsible for perception, thinking, and understanding. Basically, taking the right decision at the right time. According to ayurveda mind has three gunas or states viz sattva, rajas and tamas.
Sattva guna means purity. So, a sattvic mind is always steady, happy & healthy.
Tamas and rajas are Manasdoshas i.e conditions of imbalance of mind.
These manadoshas are responsible for ailments like anxiety, depression, fear, anger & worry.
Now a days, tension is a commonly used term. Everyone from a student to an elderly individual is stressed out.
Frequent and long term exposure to stress can lead to other forms of mental disorders like anxiety, depression, insomnia and even conditions like schizophrenia in severe cases.
Prolonged stress also causes many ailments like high blood pressure, skin problems, heart disease, acidity, obesity, infertility and disturbed sleep cycle.

I find it easier to get to sleep on a cold pillow, for some reason or other. So, if I've been lying awake for some time, I turn my pillow over. And, for me, "counting sheep" does work sometimes - I picture them, one at a time, jumping over a gate, and count. I think it's the boredom and stopping my mind from wandering which does the trick.
My husband swears by a small glass of whisky (as does my cousin who is 102!) and he always keeps some herbal sleeping tablets handy.
A glass of warm milk and a biscuit is relaxing.
Camomile tea is a herbal method, and lettuce sandwiches!
Good-night, sleep well, sweet dreams.

Try drinking chamomile tea it helps relax you! Read about it online.
Chamomile tea has been shown to work as a depressant that can soothe one's nerves and bring in relaxation, which can lead to sleep. As most people in the work force are fueled by caffeine and stress, chamomile can alleviate the gradual deconstruction of one's digestive system due to caffeine, which usually leads to stomach upsets at nighttime when in a reclining position.
Chamomile might offer several benefits to people suffering from depression and related conditions. Because of chamomile's weak sedative effects, it might treat insomnia, nightmares and other sleep disturbances in people coping with depression. Preliminary evidence also suggests that chamomile can ease symptoms of anxiety, which is often associated with depression. Many people with depression also experience painful conditions like headache, backache and irritable bowel syndrome; the University of Maryland Medical Center notes that chamomile might offer relief from these conditions.
Spread the message!
Best to drink it when hot and give it a few days to work the best!
PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE:
EVERYONE GO DOWN AND READ THE BENEFITS ON THIS WEBSITE OF CHAMOMILE TEA:

Try praying. When I can't sleep it is usually because I have a lot on my mind. It is always a good idea to go to the Lord and talk about it! I have found that sleepless nights are when he speaks to my heart most often and has given me the most profound answers to my problems. Good luck to you!
