The English and Russians kept them busy long enough for America to get there. The English and Americans then proceeded to kick butt... together.

How about this answer: In Europe, Germany and its allies lost the war to the US, UK, France, the Soviet Union (who took Berlin and caused Hitler's suicide) and their allies (New Zealand, Canada, Poland, etc.).
In the Far East and the Pacific, Japan was defeated, mainly, by the US. Although in New Guinea, the Australians beat them and in South East Asia the main effort was carried by the British Commonwealth. In China the Japanese armies were kept at bay by the Chinese, both Nationalist and Communist although the former were not as keen. After Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and trounced the Manchurian based Japanese Army.

From a cynical point of view, consider that by 1970, 25 years later, Japan and Germany were among the strongest countries of the world.

Who won??

"County", I assume you mean country. Its unfair to say the war was won by one country. The big three are likely Britian, America and Russia. If any of those 3 were lost, so would be the war. However, at a loss of 27 million and facing three times as many times as the US and us British, the Russians really are the unsung heroes of WW2.

Tricky question and youll get a lot of biased answers for both ways.

Without the English, Europe would have been in German hands before the US got involved. But w/o the US, England would have gotten into German hands.

It was a joint effort, could the US have driven back the Nazis by themselves? Probably not, but the Soviets and Americans could have made a different plan and it might have worked. But w/o Britain, all of Europe would have been in Nazi Control by the time the US got involved.

This is all the War in Europe, the Americans won the War in the Pacific by themselves hands down. No one can argue w/ that.

According to Germany Russia .But the obvious answer has got to be Russia anyway Germany invaded Russia but Russia drove them back through i dont know how many countries .all the way into Germany where they built the Berlin wall and were in occupation for decades
unlike the Holly wood version ,the reality was that barely a 5th of the German Army was even fighting in Europe .most were sent to the Russian Front .

The USA, USSR and UK, without all of them it is likely that we would be in a much different world. Churchill said "It was the Russians who took the heart and soul out of Germany".
The UK held Germany in check for most of the war from the battle of Britain, to helping resistance groups to bombing strategic targets to D-Day itself. The USA was extremely important in overcoming Japan and in Europe from D-Day onwards. You missed the Russians out of the question and they were probably the most important. Don't forget the contribution of Canada, the many resistance groups, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey and the British empire!

Clearly on the face of it the UK, USA and USSR won the military fight, however if you look at who won the economic war of the following thirty years it was Japan and Germany who wrecked the economies of the three "winners"

The UK was bankrupted by our American allies making us pay up until the 1980's for the equipment they sent us when we were under siege before they entered the war.

I heard somebody say -militarily Russians beat the Germans, The British the Italians and the Americans beat the Japanese.
lf. Both Germany and Japan became regional economic superpowers by the 60s . Russia and the US super powers. France latched on to German post-war growth along with Italy -but Britain lost her special relationship with the commonwealth/empire.

The only major power to lose (the peace) was Britain - it finished up in debt and reduced to a shadow of its former self.-- even thou technically it was ion the winning side and actually started the war.

BTW The worldview is too Anglo-centric , by far the biggest and decisive battels ALL happened on the Eastern Front.

Arguably, the USSR made the greatest contribution to winning the war in Europe. They certainly took the heaviest casualties of any of the Allies.

The War in the Pacific was, obviously, won primarily by America.
