I read about it in the New York Times, and was wondering if anyone got surprising results.

I had a DNA test; I wasn't really surprised, except for the widespread areas of ancestry. All of Europe; most of the Middle East; Egypt, Morroco, South Africa; islands from Greenland, Isle of Man, Canary Islands, Jamaica, islands in the Carribbean, the Pacific, China, Russia, Inuits and Eskimos, the Philippines, Australia, Central and South America, American Indians...in other words, just about every where. Which fits the history books (the real ones, not the ones used in public schools or colleges that I had to use).

That comes as a bonus with the GENEALOGY yDNA surname research projects.

Genealogy is about researching and documenting dead ancestors.

It is not paleontology or anthropology, or hunter-gatherer migration studies of prehistoric people 10,000 and more years ago.

To answer your specific question, since I am female I had the familytreedna test kit sent to my brother and it's his yDNA whose markers are being compared with others of our surname.

I did. I have one Jewish ancestor, maybe, 300 years ago, give or take 50 years. Everyone else is the usual blend; English, Irish, German, Swiss, Dutch, Huguenot . . .
