I want to see if anyone can figure this out: In the bible it states that Adam & Eve were the 1st & only people on the earth, then they had two sons Cane & Abel. Cane kills abel, then later on it says "And Cane knew his wife & they bare two sons" OK STOP, how in the world if there was only 3 people on earth Adam, Eve & Cane... how did Cane all the sudden get a wife & have kids?

Okay to the people who said "the land of nod".. how were there other cities & land if EARTH IS EARTH. What there was some alien planet that was "the land of nod" & now its called Mars or something? To the other people who said Adam had many kids okay as far as I know they didnt mention them in there unless I missed it somewhere, but in any case that means that incest went on in the bible unless God just pointed his finger towards the earth & said we need more people & then ***pop, pop, pop, pop*** tinkerbell magic & there was people!

Yep, a puzzler. Cain gets a mark put on his brow so other people won't kill him after he kills Abel and is sent out of the family home. Here's where I think evolution and the Bible merge--Adam and Eve WERE new creations- the others were the descendents of evolution. Did Cain marry one of the descendents? Could be. Could the evidence that early stone age man had a reverence for the dead and buried them with tokens-could this practice and evidence of sentiment have originated with Cain? maybe.
Could Cro-Magnon man have superior skills after encountering Cain?
I hope I'm right--I always felt sorry for Cain. Why wasn't his sacrifice as good as Abel's? Didn't he work just as hard-maybe harder-as Abel? Ok, he shouldn't have killed Abel and maybe deserved to be banished- but maybe it was an accidental death or a crime of passion. One of the reasons I want to get to Heaven is because I have a lot of questions I want answered.

Both Cain and Seth - actually, ALL of Eve's offspring - mated with ape-like primates from the nearby forest. This guaranteed the fallen status of what we now know as humankind. Adam & Eve were physically different from and superior to us, having been formed directly in God's own image from dirt and spit.
This is the only logical way to reconcile the story in Genesis which MUST retain its absolute inerrancy while avoiding the nasty complication of apparent incest. As nice side-benefits, it ties in some notion of evolution and explains why sex with animals should still be considered acceptable.

Adam lived for more than 900 years. You think Adam and Eve would only have 3 boys over that period? The Bible does not record every son or daughter, but those that have to do with the future narrative and the Messianic line. There are Muslim families having 52 kids. How many do you think Adam and Eve could have in 10 lifetimes?

According to Josephus Adam and Eve had many children, Cain didn't marry his sister but his niece, the number of children that Adam and Eve had are unknown.
The DNA back that was more pure for the purpose of procreation of the human family since their wasn't anyone else to procreate with. It wasn't until later that God made it where incest would bring about bad genes. I would say around the Time the Law of Moses was given.

according to the old testament class i was forced to take adam and eve, while they may have been the first people, were not the only people. clues to this are when God tells them "childbirth will be in pain from now on," implying children had been born before. also it talks about neighboring tribes and such. adam and eve were the first to screw up but not the only people around. hope that helps.

It is powerful psychological metaphor. Adam and Eve represent aspects of mind (reason and creation) in the story of the birth of the ego (tempted by others and ultimately being shamed for seeking power) resulting in loss of joy/separation from Self - our true nature. Cain, the ego, kills the natural self (Abel) and carrys the mark (defensive identity) throughout life.
These are profoundly insightful stories, and have nothing to do with the evolution of humanity.

Adam lived for 900 years... the bible doesn't list every son or daughter, especially because daughters were considered inferior... however it does mean that all those people who look down on incest are products of incest...

I think I remember my pastor saying that after Adam and Eve, God created more people, but I (or he) could be wrong there. Otherwise I'm sure we would have laughed at the incest like we did when we learned about Noah, and I don't remember that.

The Utuk guy is right. The old testament is mostly a history of the hebrew people, not of all humanity. So much of it is cloudy metaphors, so you should exercise caution before taking every word literally.

Questions like this is why we have "bible scholars". We need a lot of people to sit around and make up new stories to explain contradictions and exclusions in the bible.
They've been especially prolific on this particular issue.
