Not a lot of experience, but from what I've seen it all depends. It's not going to get the girl attracted to you if you have a witty yet stupid line, although if she was interested before and the line is said in a light and funny tone then she may laugh at the stupidity and it may work. So my answer would be, occasionally.

Anything that breaks the ice and gives you a foot in the door "works", the question is, will they work for you? Some guys feel cheesy about delivering "lines" so it's an approach they shy away from (that would be me), other guys deliver them so entertainingly that even though they sound ridiculous they come across nicely...it's just a matter of style and what you're comfortable with. So, go find your niche.

in most cases, no. usually anything that's "canned" and out of context is not going to work. but what you can do is have default "scenario" based lines. for example if your in a book store and a cute girl rolls up next to you and you notice her eying for a book. you can say "noooooooooooo, not that one" or if your waiting in an elevator and cute girl comes in "and the silence was deafening" is enough to get a response and start building rapport. anything done with enough congruency and authority you can usually get away with.
or you can use the canned line and over emphasize it. and make it known that your only saying the line for humor.
just remember, anything that you say has to be congruent with who you are.

pick up lines are cute if u are joking about them like after u say them ( if u dare to) just start laughing and say i dont kno y guys think that will actually work on a lady and at that point they will most like respond better than being serious about ur pick up line

welll sometimez it jus get a conversation started r sum gud laughs and u n dat person mite start talking r mayb even datin if u exchange digitz........ You get 2 knw that person n find out he r she iz kinda cul u may wana b friendz r even mates sum thangs dnt seem as bad as they luk sum timez so my answer iz pick up lines do wk itz jus hw da person throw dem at cha hahahaha

Sometimes ... I know a lot of guys who have tried cheesy lines with me and succeeded only because I thought it was cute or funny ... and laughed about it with him ... if they make me smile - that's usually a good thing ... !

Its a numbers game. My brother has picked up girls with lines like,
"can i smell your ****? No? Must be your shoes."
"what ya gunna cook me for breakfast *****" etc
curse hes also been slapped, kicked and had drinks chucked at him too.
