I just posted this question:
My puppy has had diarrhea for the last 2 days and I don't know why. I haven't changed her dog food or changed anything at all in the way that she eats. I dunno if it would make a difference but she has been eating grass outside. What could be the cause of this? I DO NOT have the money to take her to the vet so what can I do as a home remedy to help her?
First off let me say that the people who were downing me for not having the money right now and saying I shouldn't have gotten the dog have no idea what is going on with my life this instant that I'm strapped finacially, so DON'T post any of those comments.
Additional info that may be helpful:
She is 7 months old, and she is still running around the house like a nutcase like she always does. Her diarrhea is mild, a pudding like texture. So what can I do from home? Pepto?

There are so many different things that can be wrong with your baby! I know that you said you can't afford to take your dog to the vet. However, there are low-cost clinics almost everywhere that shouldn't cost you more than $20 to have her checked. Second, if that isn't an option, take a stool sample into the vet and have it checked. (That usually only costs about $10) Either of these options are cheap, and they have a better chance of helping you than we do! Good luck!

Ok, If you give her pepto remember it has aspirin in it, just give her a half of teaspoon, you will have to open her mouth and put it in on the tung, she will not like it and she will spit out some of it, but a vet told me once, that it will not hurt them, just don't over-due it. It will stop the diarrhea and the stomache upset, I use it on my dog and she is very healthy, I also give her a baby aspirin every day for her arthritis, she's seven years old, and a miniture German Pincher. This vet told me she won't live past 9 years, just because of the breed she is, so I'm making her life more easier, while she is with me, their just like kids aren't they ,lol;remember what i said about the grass, it is something that is natural for a dog to do. don't worry about that to much, If the dog continues to have the scoots and trowing up even after the pepto, then you may have to find a way of getting the animal to a vet, sorry I know ya didnt want to hear that but it might be something that home remedies can't tackle, Oh, be sure to tell the vet what ya been doing with any medications ya gave the dog and it's eating habits including the grass.

Sometimes over feeding will cause loose stools. Have you increased the amount of food you give the dog or maybe given treats the dog is unaccustomed to?

Home remedy:
Withhold all food for 12 to 24 hours. If the dog appears thirsty give a small amount of water or ice cubes to lick. You can give your dog a spoonful of kaopectate three times a day. As the dog begins to respond start an easily digested diet that contains no fats, such as hamburger and rice (one part meat to two parts rice, discard broth) cottage cheese or soft boiled eggs are suitable in small amounts. Continue the bland diets for a couple of days after the diarrhea has stopped even if the dog seems well.

A diarrhea that persist for more than 24 hours should not be allowed to continue and you should consult your vet without delay. You could at least phone the vet and see what they tell you. The call is free and it will help ease your mind.

ok I do understand about the money probblem. Please try this and if it soesn't get better in 3 days ty to see if you can find a vet that willhelp you .
The first ond formost MAKE SURE SHE IS DRINKING AND DOESN'T DEHYDRATE.
grass is a natural med for diarhea and soothes the tummy.
Now boil some chicken and then use that water to make some white rice then feed him just the chicken and rice mix only and small amount a few times a day ( sorry you din't say what kind so I don't know how much a feeding to give her)
hopefully within 2days you should notice the stool getting better. As it gets back to normal slowly add teh dry food to the rice and chicken.
Another thing is it shouldn't cost much but try to bring a stool sample to the vet and have it tested for worms it's usually under $8
Good Luck

When a dog eats grass the dog is in stress. Most cases are the wrong food. The dog is probably eating the wrong kind of food for the wrong breed. You should spend more time with her. Watch her eat her food, maybe she doesn't like the food. Most dogs hate when you look at them eat so pretend like you are doing something then when she's eating quietly watch her. Try to take the dog on a walk at least once a week.

Maybe you are in stress? Dogs can hear the stress in your voice when you talk to them. To relive stress try yoga or meditation. Try to lay on the floor with the dog and pet them in their favorite spot. Dogs love when you do this.

Maybe the dog has lack of play. Run around the house with the dog. If you can't run that much try a bike. Give the dog rawhide bones, ropes, and squeaky toys. Play tug o war with the dog when dog is 1 year or older. You should do this because when dogs are teething they like to take stuff from you. Playing tug o war will make them play keep away.

Here's some tips to a healthy life style:
*Bring dogs for walks on cool days or in the early morning and late afternoon

*When you have enough money go to a vet and ask which food should your dog use

This is a normal reaction that young puppies have from eating grass. I have had a vet tell me to use a little Pepto Bismol to settle the diarrhea , Use just a small amount and keep track of the stools, which will be black in color and hopfully more solid.

There are MANY possible causes and no one can possibly tell you what's wrong with your dog over the internet. While we may be very sorry that your life isn't going well, we are not responsible for your life and your dog. You are! If you live in the US, there are public libararies in virtually every town and all of them have books on pet care.

You could try Pepto Bismol but most dogs really hate it. Kaopectate may work as well. However, if they don't work, you will still have to take your dog to a vet.

She might have aten too much or something that didn't agree with her digestive system. She is eating grass because when dogs throw up, they eat grass. It's just something they do, I don't know why. So she probably threw up and may be kinda sick. Don't over feed her and maybe wait a few days and see how she is doing. She probably be just fine soon. If not, I'm NOT saying take her to the vet but just call your local vet and see what he says. I hope this helps ;)

Pudding texture is not the worst form of diahrea. It worries me that it has gone on for two days, but the fact that she is running around like normal is a good sign. Maybe she ate something when you were not looking?

I'd give her canned pumpkin with her normal food. Canned pumpkin. Not pumpkin pie filling. Pure pumkin, in a can. Works wonders for an upset tummy/diahrea.

If your puppy doesn't get better soon, or starts to act tired and listless/not herself, I thin kyou have to take her to the vet, even though you can't afford it. Maybe soneone can loan the money, or you can explain it to the vet and they can put you on a payment plan or something. They may even offer you some free advice.

But try the pumpkin! And I've used pepto on my dog. It's not bad for them. I give one chewable tablet to my 65 pound lab. So give less for a smaller dog. My vet said it's not bad for htem so don't worry.

Soft stool of that degree is generally not a concern to me.

However, things you can do at home that CAN help with occasional looser stool and/or diarrhea include:

withhold food for 24 hours
Start back with a bland diet (boiled ground beef or chicken, plain rice)
Use Slippery Elm powder in the food
Plain canned pumpkin can help bulk and firm stool, and is also an excellent remedy for constipation

If it continues, call your vet, explain your situation, and ask if you can just bring in a stool sample and not have to pay for an office visit.
